Our daughter is 7 weeks old, and we've only gone out to eat a handful of times. Most of the time she falls asleep in the car, and usually stays asleep through the meal. The few times she was awake she was generally able to be entertained by being held or playing with a toy while she laid in her car seat.

Ummm, we don't! Restaurants are not stroller/baby friendly where we live. We have our choice of McDonalds or a formal place with white tablecloths and enough silver for the royal family. There is an absence of mid priced and family places, but that's the culture here. When people have kids, they eat at home.

We would bring lots of toys and a mum-mum (baby cracker). Electronics are good. Now, we line up her water, cheerios, baby food and take turns if necessary but she can usually make it through the meal nowadays. It wasn't too fun at 3 months (check, please!) but it got better at around 5 months b/c we could bring some solids along and she started sitting up in the high chair looking around and practicing picking up cheerios. Our baby doesn't sleep in public, ever, so I feel ya! Some babies are just meant to sleep... a lot! I have no idea what that is like.

We carried our daughter around in her carseat until she was old enough to sit in one of those high chairs and she was almost always very good, we would bring a bottle and toys and she would just sit in there and play or eat until she fell asleep. We were very blessed.

@artbee: you may have to explain why each time to your waitstaff, but once you do, they are usually on board with your request. I almost always order soup and salad or a sandwich so I can get my food first and out of the way.

i think some babies are just calm. i saw a woman get a manicure and her baby (maybe a year or so) just sat there in his stroller smiling. i was in awe. i can't imagine ever doing that with charlie!

eating out gets even harder as they get older. i wouldn't attempt it on my own -- i always have mr. bee with me!

Pelikila- awesome Idea! I'll start telling them to bring out whatever is ready first ... and then I'll order easy meals :)

Venice- we don't have a choice, she's always needed the constant juggling, rocking, pushing, moving. I try, but she won't let me sit still or sit down. I think the other baby might have been better behaved because she had a pacifier, my lo wont take one.

I think one problem with going out to dinner is we start getting close to bed time :(

Mine will sleep in his stroller. He likes it in there and will also sleep just fine in his infant car seat. We're not big on bouncing him around (just never started) so he doesn't know otherwise (not at all the bouncing/walking around is a bad thing...some babies need it). The other mom may have just timed it well though. I know when I'm out I try to time it so he's either sleeping and/or just had a bottle. As he gets older I don't really care now if he needs to eat while we're out and we both deal with the feedings better.

My LO had to be asleep at that age or else we had to take turns holding her. Now that she is older, at least she can be occupied with eating herself so it is better.

Until about 6.5 months old when he could sit up in a highchair without support we took turns holding my son. We started asking the waitstaff to bring out whatever was ready first, not to wait for it all to be ready at the same time. That was the only way we could possibly have a chance at both eating a warm meal.

We pretty much have to take turns holding LO if she isn't asleep. She likes to sit with us and look at the table and such but likes to switch between DH and I. I also nurse at the table often which buys us a lot of time.

My husband and I went to dinner the other day and we saw a mother with her baby. She got her dinner, sat down, and ate. Her baby was in her stroller and just laid there. Didn't make a peep.

Meanwhile my LO was 3 months old. She was in her stroller and slept. I constantly have to jiggle the stroller or she'll wake up. If she's awake, I still have to jiggle the stroller or she'll scream. Usually she'll scream anyway and I'll have to hold her. And most of the time she prefers that I stand, so I don't get to sit and eat a meal. I stand with my baby in my hand and shove food in my face. Or I can wait until my food gets cold and wait for my hubby hold her, or vise versa.

I was in awe, watching this mom eat a meal. And her LO was obviously the same age as my baby.

What is eating out like for the rest of you mom's? Any tips on how to make it easier?
