If I knew I was going out for a meal then I would try to eat well and limit my calories during the day so I could enjoy my meal in the evening without worrying about blowing out.

Turkey burger- no bun, side salad with vinaigrette

Fish with some type of salsa topping and double up on side veggies

Water to drink.

Basically, I forgo my usual pasta and opt for protein and veggies.

@gingerbebe: ooo I miss Indian cuisine.....! Something we haven't had for a long time because DS isn't a great fan of it. Can't wait to eat that again when DS grows out of that ! I miss their spinach dish (saag paneer) so much. I just did a google search it said it is only 194 calories! Ahhh I need it!

@avivoca: Yes I order water with lemon too usually nowadays. One thing I discover though, if I do order a glass of white wine and I eat slowly, I do tend to eat less. So I do treat myself to a glass very rarely :silly:

@rachiecakes: I am exactly like you - I "researched" what to order prior to the dinner trip! Sometimes I think I am a bit lunatic but some dishes are insane, with the most innocent things, like a tiny quiche lorraine (which I used to order all the time) could be 1000+ calories!

@autumnleaves: I have a soft spot for sashimi...! I've been trying to see if I can be "comfortable" ordering just sashimi and a side of edamame, without the rice. Just haven't been satisfying...! trial and error.....

@snowjewelz: That's a great idea! I wasn't sure if it was weird to ask for "bunless" but apparently a few of you are doing it so I feel more normal ! Today i ordered a burger (again) but asked for "lettuce wrap" and I was happily provided with extra lettuces on the side, and it was a very traditional/ old fashioned BBQ restaurant too! I was quite surprised.

@MCD919: I used to LOVE pasta.... and I am now avoiding Italian restaurants ! Maybe once in a while :-)

My other trouble when eating out is guacamole....! Yummmmm

Unsweetened iced tea and a big salad are my healthy go-tos at restaurants. I usually have some type of protein on the salad and limit the unhealthy (fun) stuff, like cheese croutons etc. and dressing on the side. If I order an entree it's usually some type of fish. I try to stay away from pasta or anything fried, too cheesy etc.

Like looch I like to eat things I don't make at home so I'll order seafood - something without cheese or carbs - or not a lot of it.
Even though it has rice - I still feel healthy ordering shashimi.

Non seafood treats - one of my favorite restaurants has a thai chicken salad that has just the right amount of heat.

I only order water or unsweetened tea and I use an app to look at calories before going to the restaurant.

Most of the burger places I go to do a bunless style so instead of buns I get a whole bowl of salad which is great.

We don't go to chains all that often, and I've found that most restaurants are very accomdoating. When I had GD during pregnancy I was almost always abel to swap out the carbs for something else (I was always sitting so I don't know if they would've known I was pregnant or if it made a difference).

I avoid getting a cocktail or soda, I will drink unsweetened tea.

I typically will order grilled fish, with vegetables on the side. My problem is that I want to order things I don't prepare at home and that usually means things with cream sauces.

I actually order the whole burger but I cut it in half. Or I order a black bean burger, which I like quite a lot. I also order water with lemon because soda/sweet tea has a lot of calories.

If I'm trying to be good, I order a salad with chicken and dressing on the side or a chicken Caesar at casual places. Or a steak and Caesar. If I do burgers, I have to have some bun, so I just leave the bottom half of the bun since the top half is thicker. I have a weakness for fries but if I can sneak some off my husbands plate then that's enough.

Tacos tend to work out pretty well - corn tortillas are pretty decent nutritionally as long as I can stay away from the chips. Or I'll do chicken enchiladas with no cheese and a side salad.

DH and I did Indian buffet a lot when we were trying to lose weight - we would get big plates of salad and top them with chicken tikka or tandoori chicken and chickpeas and cilantro chutney and yogurt sauce. We would eat some papppadums (chickpea crisps) on the side of we wanted a little crunch.

We tend to mind carbs when we are trying to diet but not fat.

When I am good, I would be ordering something like mahi mahi tuna with salad, dressing on the side. Last weekend I was craving burger, so I ordered burger but didn't eat the bun. It was so wasteful so the next day I (again) ordered a burger, but asked them if they could do a lettuce wrap. And they did! I was eating with fork and knife but it was very nice and I didn't have to waste the bun. :) Also just salad or veggies on the side, or I am thinking I could try to ask for sweet potato fries...

Then on Friday I was at pappadeaux, a very nice seafood restaurant. I was literally googling the calories when ordering and I ordered crawfish etouffee. I found it very surprising that their site says it is only 260 calories? I can't imagine because it came with a lot of rice! So I didn't eat any of the rice and I hope it is accurate that only the crawfish stew is 260 calories.... and apparently crawfish is very low calorie. I'd be ordering that from now on it is sooooo good! Maybe I'll ask for a veggie substitution to the rice next time.

What do you usually order when eating out? And what are some of the things you discover that are actually very low calories while eating out? Care to share? :)
