I ate a lot of PBJ's while pregnant, but my LO still has a pretty serious peanut allergy. :(

@littlebug: I didn't think about dairy. We never do dairy, but maybe I'll do some raw yogurt and cheese after the baby gets here? Even though they will follow our diet when they're young, I know it is unrealistic for me to think they are never going to go out for ice cream. :)

@tlcbaby: All nuts, seafood (there's some seafood allergies in my family), dairy, soy, eggs...pretty much anything, I guess! Basically, I didn't limit my diet to "avoid" exposure to anything. I ate everything I normally eat!

I ate a varied diet until my daughter developed milk protein intolerance. At that time I ate a ton of cashews while her gut was inflamed. She now has a severe cashew allergy, but I'm not sure I would have changed my early exposure strategy. Certainly the latest research is showing that early exposures lead to a lower risk of allergies to that food.

I'm of the mind that exposure to allergens can help prevent or lessen allergies, so I ate potential allergens all through pregnancy and breastfeeding! I've read studies that support that, and studies that refute it.

i have no idea how allergies develop, but i figure i should try to expose LO to a wide variety of foods through my breastmilk. i eat a lot of peanut butter!

I've always heard that it doesn't make a difference. I certainly don't think it could hurt, but I don't think it will help either.

My husband and I follow a Paleo diet so we don't really eat peanuts except very rarely. He suggested I eat a bit of peanut butter for the last few weeks of pregnancy and while breastfeeding so that our baby is exposed to them through the food I eat to potentially avoid allergies.

I'd like to do a little more research to find out if it does make a difference, but I just wondered if anybody here had an opinion on this. It wasn't something I had really thought about until he brought it up.
