@Mrs. Bee: I don't even know if he's not ready or if he just doesn't like to eat. I don't know if he's ready ever. Today he ate only a few bites at breakfast (he drank 4.5 oz about an hour before), a few chopped up fruit / cheese at lunch (3 oz bottle after), then took him forever to eat a few bites at dinner (but he did drink a 5 oz bottle an hour before). I don't even know how could he eat so much less than all babies at the same age.

He's super picky too. Nowadays when I give him cereal with fruit he just acts like I am making him eat poo. He used to eat yogurt with no problem but this morning he acted weird. I made lamb puree with tomatoes and sweet potatoes - it was a hit a week ago and today he didn't want it anymore. I used to make chicken porridge which was a hit for weeks and also failing now. I am running out of ideas what to feed him. Argh!

@rachiecakes: That's 6 milk feedings. Good for you! My LO would go crazy if we feed him that many times. It is already very challenging to get the 5 milk feedings in. He very seldomly would cry for hunger. Even if he wakes up in the morning he doesn't usually cry for hunger.

I like your schedule but he usually wakes around 6-6:30am, and his last bottle (he decided he's done with nursing just a few days ago :'( ) is at 7pm so he goes to sleep at around 715pm.

@irene: I know it's really, really easy to worry. I'm lucky that my daughter is such a good eater. For comparison, I am a near pathologically picky eater, so I think most of it is just luck.

@Mrs. Bee: DS is almost 10 months and the same! he hated bottles but really loves his food. He has 3 meals, plus snacks and sometimes an extra fruit if he really seems hungry. He's in the 10th percentile for weight so our pediatrician said to keep feeding him if he appears hungry.

5am - nurse
830am - breakfast (baby yogurt)
9am - 4oz bottle
1230pm - lunch (solids, usually fruit with cereal and a few mum mums)
1pm - 4oz bottle
330pm - 4oz bottle
6pm - dinner (baby pasta and a veggie, sometimes an extra fruit)
730pm - 4oz bottle
830-9 - bedtime - nurse

@irene: charlie was like that. at that age he was taking 4oz bottles and eating solids twice a day, but he never really liked solids (and still doesn't).

it sounds like your lo is not ready for 3 meals yet so maybe going back to your previous feeding schedule would be better for now?

@Mrs. Bee: LO doesn't like to EAT in general. haha. sigh.

It doesn't matter... if we offer milk first, he'd drink maybe 3-5 oz, then he'd not want to eat that much solids. If we offer solids first, he'd eat maybe 2-3 oz of food, then he'd not want to drink milk. I seriously don't know what fuels him.

we didn't start 3 meals a day until olive was 10 months. also once olive really got into solids, she started drinking less milk. she used to take 4-5oz bottles, but now she takes 3oz max (but she hates bottles).

does your lo love solids more than milk?

@sarac: I wouldn't worry too if my LO eats as well as yours does! This morning at 6:20a he drank 4.5 oz breastmilk (He recently decided he is done with nursing, DONE :'( ). at 7:40 I made some oatmeal cereal mixed with blueberries and banana, and he only ate a few bites and kept rubbing his face and refusing to take more! I also made avocado with banana, he also wouldn't eat. Then I opened some yogurt he ate a few more bites. I then chopped up some grapes and put out some cheerios he ate maybe a few pieces. Sigh! All that effort for maybe 1 oz of food into his stomach :-(

@autumnlove: Thanks! Yes sometimes I save the milk for the next feeding too.... but sometimes I couldn't save it because the nutritionist we saw (we have weight gaining issues cuz of how much LO doesn't like to eat) advised us to put 1 tsp of formula powder into each 2 oz of breastmilk. So with that mixed in I am not sure if the milk can last another 3 hours. Then now we are cutting into our frozen milk reserve, and when the frozen milk is warmed up I didn't want to put it back to the fridge for the next feeding as I don't know if they are still good. Sigh!

I don't follow any strict schedules...she eats about every 2.5 to 4 hours. I always give her a bottle before solids which we do about 3 times a day...sometimes less! I think I'll follow a more structured feeding schedule when she turns one.

Do you save the milk when he refuses the bottle? I always save for the next feeding (sometimes 2) if LO doesn't finish.

Sorry I'm not more help! Hope you guys find your groove! :-)

I was never strict about food and milk, but we went to three meals a day pretty early, about 7 months. At 8 months she was eating 3-5 ounces of puree or yogurt each meal, sometimes with oatmeal mixed in. Then a little or a lot of mushed up solid food with each one, whatever I was eating. I still nursed her very frequently at this stage too, and I didn't worry about whether I did it before or after.

@irene: haha i didn't even realize those two schedules were before and after weaning! :) I actually dried up by accident around that time so it wasn't my decision to wean, but I think it ended up being the right time for us. And no constipation problems with the switch to formula for us.

@mrs. wagon: Thanks for sharing !

I can't help but wonder it looks like you weaned at 8 months even though your baby nursed! I am starting to wean him off of breastmilk now only because he's refusing me and it's been a pain in the butt to pump and feed.

From your experience did he have constipation problems after switching to formula? Just wondering..

@Mrsbells: I am thinking about that too.... it is so weird because when we first started, he'd take the bottle fine after lunch. I don't know what is up with this week because he'd be a pain at his before bed nursing/bottle too! So he basically missed 2 bottles thus waking up at night. Sigh. Maybe I'll stop lunch for a bit and see what happens. If he starts drinking more again then I'll reintroduce lunch....

I'm not at this stage yet, but I think if he was doing fine with 2 meals and doesnt seem hungrier then I would go back to just the two meals so he can drink up the breastmilk, Because he is getting more nutrients from the breastmilk anyway

@irene: here was our schedule around 8 months:

5:00am: wake up for diaper change, go back to sleep
7:00am: wake up
7:30am: breakfast (fruit, oatmeal, nursing)
9:00am: 1st nap
11:30am: lunch (veggie, rice cereal, 4 oz formula bottle)
12:30pm: 2nd nap
2:00pm: snack (fruit, nursing)
4:00pm: 3rd nap
5:00pm: dinner (meat, veggie, rice cereal, nursing)
6:30pm: bath, bedtime bottle (6.5 oz pumped breastmilk)
7:00pm: bedtime

and at 9 months:
8:00am: Breakfast (6 oz formula, oatmeal & fruit)
11:30am: Lunch (6 oz formula, veggie & rice and usually yogurt)
3:00pm: Snack (4-6 oz formula, yogurt)
6:00pm: Dinner (meat & veggie & rice, fruit)
6:45pm: Bedtime bottle (6 oz thawed breastmilk)

I remember now I swapped whether solids or formula came first depending on what he seemed to prefer at the time (fed the one he DIDN'T prefer first so he would be hungry). As you can see, at 8 months I fed solids first, then at 9 months he preferred the solids so I fed the bottle first.

For some reason, if we do solids before bottle, he won't take the bottle at all after the solids regardless of how little he ate (like 2 oz of food today). When we used to do just bottle only, he would have finished a 4-5 oz bottle at lunch.

@mrs. wagon: how does/did your actual schedule look like? I just can't figure out...

@littleveesmommy: How lucky that your LO takes the 7pm nurse after eating at 6:30! Recently mine won't take the 7pm nursing or bottle and just cry hysterically and we did our last solids at 4:30 / 5 ! Then he started waking up at night.

@Baby Boy Mom: @sarac: I wrote our pediatrician and he said just let LO decide how much he wants to eat and don't drop lunch. However, after him consistently sleeping through the night for weeks now he started waking up at night again. Last night I didn't feed him because I was pissed off (I was just getting used to sleeping through the night myself too!) but I guess I'll have to do that if he wakes tonight. I am pretty bummed.

Mine went to three at 6 months, but she still nursed like crazy. I'd say, if yours is happy and gaining weight on three meals, let them drop the bottle. If not, go back to two and keep it.

I have to agree with your friends. He might not be ready for 3 meals yet. My LO only started 3 meals of solids between 9-10 months, before that he wasn't too interested, and also not as active so he probably didn't need as much. Babies are pretty good at self regulating how much they eat.

LO is also just over 8 months and I'm still doing breast milk before solids for meals. I want to make sure she gets breast milk as her main source of nutrition and solids as supplement for now. Her rough schedule is:

5am - nurse
830am - nurse
930am - breakfast (2 oz solids)
12pm - nurse
1pm - lunch (2-3 oz solids)
330pm - nurse
630pm - dinner (3 oz solids)
7pm - nurse to sleep

LO is a little over 8 months now and he was doing great when we were doing 2 solids (breakfast and dinner) and 5 breast milk feedings. Now that we introduced a 3rd solid meal (lunch) and it threw everything off! He is now refusing the bottle after lunch, and also refusing the nursing/bottle before bedtime.

Our schedule is in line with all those sample 8 month schedules I can google. So I am not sure what is going on. I talked to two of my friends and they both think I am feeding LO too often and that's why he's not eating.

Here is our (failing) schedule:
6:30-7am Nursing
7:45am breakfast (usually 1-3+ oz of food)
10:45am bottle 1
12:45pm lunch
1:30pm bottle 2 (he'd refuse or drink very little on this)
4:05pm bottle 3
4:30pm dinner
6:45pm bottle or nursing (he's been fussing and not want to take this one for 4 days in a row now)

What is your feeding schedule at 8-9 months? Do you have any suggestions on how to change/improve our schedule? I am just sick of prepping 5 oz bottles and having to pour those away because it is hard to pump all that milk out and pour them to the drain!
