Looks like she was just taking her time! She gained a whopping 9.5 in a week :) She was a half ounce short of her birth weight today.

Thanks everyone!

@Kemma: we have her two week check up tomorrow. I ordered a baby scale and have been doing weighed feedings that have said she's eating about 2oz at a time which is in the normal amount for her age. My scale says she has gained some weight so I'm anxious to see what the doctors scale says tomorrow

His happened to me today with my 3 week old. Mine gained past her birth weight (she was cluster feeding like crazy) now is a bit lazy on the breast I have to keep switching her to keep her swallowing rather than just sucking. My midwife suggested feeding every two hrs in the day, I have to go in to get her weighed on Monday.

Thanks ladies. I am waiting for a call from the Ped about an LC referal or about coming in to do weighed feeds. I'm pretty confident in her latch. She isn't losing weight. But today so far I'm waking her every two hours.

I agree with the others about feeding her more often. Newborns, and jaundiced babies in particular, are VERY sleepy. My first son was jaundiced (not even to the point of needing phototherapy) and I had to wake him every 2 hours to feed him to ensure he was getting enough. The only time I let him go 3 hours was overnight. That's until he was back up to his birth weight - then you can start letting them go longer between feeds.

Did she lose a lot of weight in the hospital? My pediatrician's concern would be getting back to birth weight within 2 weeks. She's almost at 2 weeks so I would take her in again at the 2 week mark to get checked - she may catch up by then. If not, like others have mentioned I would see an LC. I would also feed her every 2 hours. 3 hours is sort of on the longer end of normal for a newborn.

I had two ebf 5 lbers so I always kept a close eye on their weight. Check your local hospitals for breastfeeding support groups. The one at mine was free and open to anyone. The hospitals lactation consultant ran it and they had volunteers there to weigh your baby before and after the feed and convert the measurements to tell you how many ozs they took in.

@BabyPenguinXO: There are also several Mommy stores around here that have scales that they will let you borrow.

Even your pediatricians office should let you weigh, sit down and nurse, and then weigh again for free. Don't change any diaper or clothes between weighings.

Definitely keep track of nursing sessions and also try to keep track of wet diapers.

Some babies may skip a day or two on gaining and then catch up. But she should be gaining eventually.

she definitely doesn't have a tongue tie. My little brother had one and never got it corrected but her tongue is done. I suppose she could have an upper lip tie. But im still really sure they she is getting plenty of milk when she eats. I am trying to see an LC I just have no idea who to call I don't have any recommendations

In the beginning with E (born at 35weeks 4days) they had me nurse him every 2 hours for no longer then 15 minutes on each side (total 30 minutes). They were concerned that he was burning too many calories for the amount he was taking in. He was slow to gain at first but we also found he was tongue tied and lip tied. Once we had both corrected he did much better with milk transfer. As we speak he is laying next to me in milk coma at almost 15 months old.
I would chat with a an LC ASAP, they can help!

One thought I have is that newborns, especially preemies, are very very sleepy at first. I probably wouldn't let her go 3 hours between feeds, but try to rouse her to eat more frequently. Also, if she's only nursing for 15 minutes or so before falling back asleep, do you try to keep her a little more awake by taking off her onesie briefly or rubbing her cheek with a cool washcloth? Nursing more frequently during this time will also help your supply stay up. Good luck!

How many nursing sessions are you having in 24 hours? LLL recommends 10-12 in a 24 hour period so you could try feeding every 1.5-2 hours and see if that helps with weight gain. Also, can you tell if your LO is definitely swallowing when at the breast or just suckling?

The doctor isn't concerned yet. She had some high bilirubin numbers that are coming back down now after a 24 hour phototherapy session.

I do nurse her whenever she's fussy... She isn't really fussy... Basically just when she wakes up cause she knows it's time to eat

I wouldn't worry about a poopy diaper after every feeding my lo didn't do that and was ebf. Does your lo cluster feed? As a newborn I don't think lo had the best latch but she constantly nursed and that seemed to make up for it.

So I second seeing a lactation consultant, but also nurse on demand. Which for me meant anytime she was remotely fussy.

I'm not due at the Ped until her 2 week appt Monday but I have to put in a call tomorrow for her recent bilirubin results.

I don't know much about breastfeeding, because my lo was bottlefed (breastmilk, then formula) from basically the beginning, the first week anyway. But my dd never pooped with every feeding, not even close. The slow weight gain would have me a bit concerned though. It's good that the jaundice is going away and there are lots of wet diapers, though, so I wouldn't be in panic mode, but I would definitely put in a call to a lactation consultant and/or the pediatrician, just to make sure it gets taken care of soon.

I recommend seeing a lactation consultant esp because they can weigh her before and after a feed to see how much she is gaining. The wet diapers are a good sign but leaking milk out if her mouth doesn't tell you how much is there.
Some babies do grow slow but this should still be checked out esp with the jaundice.

My daughter was born at 35+1. She was 6 lbs 13oz and is now 6lbs 2oz. She has been about that since we came home a week ago. She's 10 days old today.

She is EBF. Goes no more then 3 hours between feeds whether I wake her or she wakes. But It seems like she only nurses for 15-20 minutes normally. Sometimes up to 30. Or sometimes she will nurse off and on for an hour (this happens probably 1-2x a day)

I just started tracking in an app with today's first feed so I can have more precise information.

She has plenty of wet diapers and had some jaundice that is slowly going away now. I know she's getting plenty of milk cause she leaks a little bit and I see it in the corners of her mouth, I've got quite a big supply.

Should I be concerned by this? Do some babies just gain slowly?
