I had a lactation consultant recommend these bottles to me.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001R1SOSG?keywords=breastflow%20bottles&qid=1452006193&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1
They are really supposed to mimic the shape of the breast, and care providers would comment on how my son really took a lot of the nipple in his mouth, like he would if breastfeeding. I thought the bottles were really great. Full disclaimer, I was only away from my son for about 4 feedings a week as I was a SAHM, so it might have been different if he was in daycare.

@Mrs D: I think the biggest thing you can do to up your supply is to pump 3 times during the day. Aim to pump every 2.5-3 hours instead of every 3.5-4.

@T.H.O.U.: I was pumping at 5am, then nursing around 6:30am, pumping at 10am, pumping at 2pm, nursing at 5:30 (when it wasnt a fail), nursing at 9pm and one MOTN feed.

I did start having some supply issues (first week at work I remember each pumping session I'd get 9oz...then it started plummeting. So maybe that was causing frustration. She never napped as well at DC as she did at home...but would still get a couple good ones in!

@babynumber1: So glad to know I am not alone. I need to do some reading on upping my supply. So far my friends have just said eat oatmeal for breakfast and drink a half of dark beer each night!

@twodoghouse: Thanks for the tip on the nipples...this will make me less nervous to introduce them earlier! I will make sure to discussed paced feeds - but from what I have seen they are good about controlling "chugging" tendencies. Cant hurt to have the conversation though. Plus the main teacher in the NB room is our babysitter - so she knows how badly I want to nurse this one longer and I know will be willing to help however she can!

@MrsSRS: I followed...maybe because I am coffee deprived as well. I kinda thought (over the last two years) it may have just been poor timing/perfect storm. This time around I am going to try to "push through" a bit more when we hit those bumps in the road. I also need to do some research on upping my supply!

My DD flipped out nursing at 4 months and she is EBF and there is no supply issue. That is just a crummy developmental age, so I'm guessing that contributed. And I agree with pp about overtiredness being a probable issue. DS also did a nursing strike around 4 months so I pumped for a while and supplementes. With DD I just pushed through because she was lousy at bottles. All this to say, maybe it wasn't anything to do with you, but just a developmental blip. Sorry this is so scattered. Need more coffee. Too lazy to edit.

@Mrs D: I don't have experience with kids in daycare, but I did combo feed nursing and bottles (formula) my twins. Were you using the slowest flow Medela nipples on your Medela bottles? I found those to be super fast, even though they were supposed to be newborn/slow flow. I used Enfamil preemie nipples from Amazon (they are disposable but per the nurses in our hospital, you can use them for a month or so then throw away. They're super cheap, so it wasn't too much issue to throw them out and get new ones, but I'm pretty sure we used them longer than a month). These fit onto our Medela bottles and are really slow flow, so my LOs had to work to get the milk/formula. I'd also make sure your daycare provider knows about paced feeds. There's no way to know if that would have made a difference with your first LO but it couldn't hurt!

@Mrs D: No joke this is exactly what has happened to me with #2. The only exception is that she will still drink BM so I am pumping 5x a day. My supply is not super strong so she is getting about 16-20 oz a day of BM and the rest formula.

Ok, that makes sense, so between 9-16 oz per day at daycare at 12 weeks old. Were you able to pump that much while you were at work? How many pumps were you doing at work? Last maybe odd question, what was her nap schedule like at daycare? Could it have been that she was overtired by 5:30 and too tired to nurse (this happened with both my kids).

@T.H.O.U.: ugh...sorry...my 2 year old dominated my life last night. (most nights).

At DC in the beginning she was using the slowest flow nipples and the small bottles from medela. (5oz I think?).

She was doing 3-4...3-4oz bottles per day...with her last bottle being around 3pm I believe. We had not introduced solids of any form yet (did that at 5mos).

So...some background:

K was born Sept 2013 - we EBF from day 1. She had a solid latch and gained nicely. She's petite so early on our Ped requested I nurse religiously every 2 hours (daytime) so I could let her sleep at night. No issues.

First bottle introduced at about 5 weeks - took it like a champ. From then - we did bottles as needed...but no regime of a bottle a day or anything.

I went back to work at 12 weeks PP - nursed in the AM, immediately upon coming home (5:30pm) and again before bed. Plus - I think we were still doing 1 MOTN feed at that point.

Not long after I went back to work K started crying hysterically during her 5:30pm sessions - my friend suggested it may be frustration with the quickness of the bottles during the day and then the first nursing session...we were not having issues at bed time or other times at this point.

Shortly after going back to work I added a pumping session 1 hour before DD woke up 1) to relief my poor boobs and 2) to add to supply.

At the end of the day....by 4.5 months K had completely abandoned nursing...and by 5 months would not even drink breast milk (bye bye 60oz freezer stash).

I am due with #2 in March...I'd like things to go better this time! I'd really like to get to 6 months. Ultimately - I want to do what is comfortable to her and I - I dont mind supplementing or bottle feeding at all. I am not so obsessed with EBF that I want to make it a miserable experience.

Wondering if any of you experts out there can see an error in my ways with K that I can maybe correct with #2? Bottle sooner/more frequent? Pump more (I did not start pumping regularly until 9-10 w PP)? Did I just need to push through that rough patch when I first went back to work? Did I give up to soon?

I'm open to input!
