100% yes to food allergies. Very common. Often times dairy or gluten but could be any allergen. Elimination is easiest but you have to give it several weeks. The skin is a window to the gut!

DD had some eczema-like patches that were pretty intense until she was about 16 months old. We did get a prescription for a steroid cream but didn't end up using it. I don't know if this is really obvious, but her pediatrician recommeded using whatever lotion we felt good about (just basic Aveeno eczema lotion) and then said that the key was adding Aquaphor on top of the lotion to keep it in. It worked soooo much better than the lotion or Aquaphor alone. (p.s., he was surprised the Aveeno seemed to not irritate her skin and said that he had seen it worsen eczema in some kids)

@bees_knees: we're already team Cetaphil wash and dye- and fragrance-free detergent but it sounds like I'll be picking up vanicream!

@GoGoSnoGirl: we also get persistent rashes in creases - to the point that when we apply our prescription, I have her show me behind her knees, elbow, underarms, and along her neck and inevitably find at least one spot. Our Rx works (just stronger hydrocortisone cream) but spots reappear all the time. It's when spots show up near her mouth and eyes that I think food allergies but I have no experience with them otherwise so idk

I came here for the first time in YEARS to seek advice from the hive regarding my daughter's rashes. She gets them on her bum/backs of her legs and one spot is thickened skin/scabby most of the time. It is hard to stay on the lotion application and I haven't been routine in what we even use. We had a Rx steroid cream, but it's almost gone, so I only use it when her spots are at their worst. Otherwise we use hydrocortisone or Cetaphil Restoraderm. My nephew has used Vanicream with success, so I guess I should try that & be more regimented in our application.
I have wondered if there's something in her diet that could be exacerbating her itchiness--she does drink a lot of organic cows milk & other dairy--but I've never done an elimination to see.

I can't speak about allergies, but for eczema/other extreme dry skin, Vanicream for the win. I didn't believe it, but it's a true miracle worker for my two (out of three) daughters who have skin issues. My youngest has certain patches that get very scaley/dry at times, and when she was younger, she would also scratch so they would peel and scab horribly. Vanicream was the only thing that would clear it up and didn't hurt her (she screams when I put Eucerin on her, which as an adult had been my go-to for winter dry hands. I personally do not see a difference in which Vanicream container we buy - we've had small tubes and large tubs with pumps, and buy the kind that goes on like white lotion (NOT a gold paste similar to Aquaphor).

Vanicream was also a lifesaver for my eczema-prone, sensitive skin kiddo. She didn't respond well to it on her face.

This cream worked wonders for her face though: https://www.aveneusa.com/xeracalm-lipid-replenishing-cream. Much more expensive, but it lasted a long while.

Came to second Vanicream, although we saw lots of improvement with just once or twice a day.

I'd also try switching your laundry detergent and bath washes, just in case. Some of the "eczema recommended" stuff (I'm looking at you, Aveeno) actually made my kids' worse.

Both of my kiddos had pretty severe eczema as babies--and one was so bad, we used the prescription steroid creams (under the direction of the pediatrician) and it turned my child's skin white in splotches--this was actually really upsetting to me, because my kids are brown and I felt like I had ruined their skin. My one child looked like she had vitiligo, her legs had splotches of white all the way up and down them, along with patches on her bum/back/arms. Unfortunately, the patches were there for over a year--a super long time. Maybe even closer to 2 years.

Anyway, after that experience, I decided trying everything else that isn't steroids needed to be done. We cut dairy and soy entirely for about 6 months, and I also read somewhere that Vanicream and Cereve (both brands, it has to be the kind in the tub, not the pump bottle) work, but you have to do it 6 times a day. Previously, I'd tried those creams, but I was only doing them 1-2 times a day, usually after their bath--and it didn't work. So for a couple of months, I lathered them up with Cereve/Vanicream at every.single.diaper.change and tried to make sure it was 6 times a day.

It felt like a lot of work at the time, but the eczema cleared up from those 2 things, and we have never had it again.

Interestingly, one of my kids still can't eat most forms of dairy, and she's 8 years old. She immediately gets a rash around her mouth, and then she'll have diarrhea a couple of hours later.

I have allergies and eczema and have since I was a little kid. I've been to different dermatologists and allergists over the years. Most say food doesn't cause it, but I had one more eccentric one say it might. I will say that the skin on your face is thin, so it's pretty common to get reactions there. Unfortunately it's an issue for me. I react to lotions and soaps that are supposed to be for sensitive skin even. The only brand I can use is called Vanicream, which is a bit more specialized, but becoming more common. I hope your little one grows out of it. 🤞🏻

My allergist says no. my 5 yo has allergies, eczema. She had a severe event when exposed to dog dander. It was the worst from infant to about 4 years old. Shes almost 6 now and has mostly outgrown the eczema.

I have a 2 year old with sensitive skin - we are constantly battling one rash or another. We have a script from the doc that is basically strong hydrocortisone cream. If I'm diligent (which requires battling an unwilling toddler) this does help with rashes.

Lately I'm wondering if there is a food allergy component - she gets rashes around her mouth sometimes and her eyes often. I'm trying to note when it happens to see if there's a pattern for now.

Wondering if anyone here has dealt with sensitive skinned kids and has any tips - besides the obvious, as we are using scent and dye free detergent, Cetaphil wash, and giving baths sparingly. Is there any credence to my food allergy suspicion?
