Foderma is my favorite serum for eczema and dry skin patches. It also works well on rashes like diaper rash and areas that commonly get ingrown hairs from shaving. It is awesome! Works better than the lotion that my dermatologist gave me.

@yin: Thanks! Going to Amazon Prime it now! I am going to request the blood test! Wouldn't be bad to get one done myself for food allergies! I had the prick test done years ago - no fun.

I do feel like she might have a little bit of allergy to oatmeal and dairy, but maybe will outgrow them. The blood test seems like a great peace of mind thing.

@JerricaBenton: Thanks! Going to request it this week!

@DillonLion: Thanks! I know, that's what our Ped said he uses on his own kids.

Hope you figure out something that works! Poor baby.

Aveeno Eczema is perfect for my LO. Clears it up immedia. She breaks out without it.

@shopaholic: You can find it at most drug stores, Target, and Amazon! I like to buy from Amazon with S&S since I go through so much of it.

After DS1 turned one, we had a blood test done to determine his food allergies -- dairy, egg, and peanuts. LO was prescribed an epi-pen, which we keep on hand at all times (and have unfortunately used once due to a peanut reaction). Later we went to see an allergist who did a skin prick test, which confirmed the allergies that we knew about and added dust mites to our list. He gets checkups every 6 months to see if his levels are improving or getting worse. At the last checkup his peanuts levels were very high but dairy was going down. He may outgrow it at almost 3 years old. Next appointment we will test to see his reaction to heated dairy. I have to bake him a muffin with x amount of milk in it, and we wait for an hour at the office to see what happens after he eats it. Crossing my fingers for good news.

Oh and one more thing. You can bathe everyday but try not to use soap every time. Always moisturize after the bath. I've heard that chlorine helps with eczema. Extra pool time wouldn't hurt. :)

Thanks Everyone for so many replies!

I've battled eczema my whole life too, but I think I need a new dermatologist for us both! I've never been prescribed Vanicream or CeraVe! I used CeraVe before but kept breaking out and my deem told me it's not for me.

I applied my Eucerin Original Cream (the really thick one) last night and it's finally calmed down a lot! The coconut oil does nothing on the flare up.

@yin: @daniellemybelle: @coacheswife123: Where do you get Vanicream? Is it prescription?

@littleveesmommy: @JerricaBenton: I DO want to get a food and allergy test done on LO. Where did you get it done? Pediatrician or Dermatologist? I have a few suspicions too, but our ped just agrees with me and says it's okay to avoid what I suspect….

@mamimami: Do you take LOs to a pediatric derm or regular? What is the compounding prescription called? Will try the Mustela Milky Bath!

@bpcmarj: Interesting! I have irritation when I use Vaseline myself. So I always just use Aquaphor?

@junebugmama:  Hmm… makes sense about the J&J.

@daniellemybelle: @purrpletulips: I prefer the bathe everyday, but lock in moisturizer right after. We need the bath for her bedtime routine too! Too scared to mess with that!

I apply the aquaphor right after his bath while his skin is still damp. That seems to be working the best. I also have used hydrocortisone (OTC, not a prescription) only a few times with bad patches and it helped quickly.

@daniellemybelle: That eczema is definitely super stubborn. I learned the hard way to just stick with the 3x daily rub down. Even now if I forget to, I notice she gets irritated and her skin is dry / uncomfortable. I sure am giving CeraVe good business!

No suggestions except to say if you decide to see a specialist, maybe you should look into a pediatric allergist. We went to one to check lo for food allergies but she treats tons of kids for eczema and tested for specific allergies if they had it.

@daniellemybelle: I agree about the conflicting information, we saw a different doctor than usual and he recommended the frequent bathing and to put lotion on while they are still damp. DD has an appointment with our regular doctor next month so I'm going to ask what her opinion is since they both have the problem.

@purrpletulips: I've heard conflicting stuff about more frequent or less frequent bathing, too.

The arguments for more frequent are 1) if anything on their skin (drool or spit-up in our case) bothers them, bathing will help, and 2) adding moisture to the skin with lukewarm water & then locking it in with lotion will help.

Then the argument on the other side is that water/wetness is irritating so you should keep them as dry as possible. Our pediatrician told us to dry her off really well after baths... but I have actually been doing the opposite & applying lotion while she is still damp to lock in the moisture.

@littleveesmommy: Your post reminded me that we really only had significant success when we were applying Vanicream 3x a day, and hydrocortisone to her patches 2-3x a day. Once her eczema cleared up, I went to just Vanicream after her nightly bath, and maybe a dab on dry patches during diaper changes. Since then she's definitely had more patches crop up again so I really should go back to lotion 3x a day!

Aveeno gives me rashes so I don't use it for the kids. We use aquaphor baby wash, aquaphor lotion (the thick, sticky ointment kind) and a prescription hydrocortisone when it flares up.

Aveeno is a J&J product, and usually just causes irritation to any skin disorders.

I have great success with coconut oil, when the boys develop eczema in the winter. However, if it's all the time, it's usually tied to a food intolerance.

We have been using Shea Moisture brand shampoo and bar soap. Then just plain old vaseline when she gets out of the bath. It is the ONLY thing that has helped and made her stop itching (which was our main problem...there was not much that was visible but she was itching like crazy). The pediatrician also said that there was something called hydrated petrolatum that we could get at the pharmacy. It is basically vaseline with water whipped into it so that it is extra moisturizing. Good luck!!

Go to a dermatologist for SURE. Our pediatrician sent us with both of our kids and it has been really helpful. In fact, the pedi thought our son had eczema and the dermatologist diagnosed him something else... (and our daughter DOES have eczema so we have a variety of skin issues in our household which I blame on my husband) but I digress,..

Have you tried Mustela milky bath?

The dermatologist also had us get this lotion MADE at a compounding pharmacy: part cold cream, part glycerin, part talc, and it is a GREAT moisturizer and costs next to nothing. I think that's the kind of random stuff a dermatologist can offer, too.

DD has been battling eczema since around 3 months old and after trying many creams/lotions, what worked best for us was CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (the one in the tub). We did lukewarm baths every other day with no soap and massaged in the CeraVe while she was still damp to lock in the moisture. She got a CeraVe rubdown morning / noon / night, and we also reinforced with a thin layer of Aquaphor on the really bad areas to really seal in the moisture. I also had a prescription hydrocortisone valerate that the pediatric dermatologist gave us if a spot is super stubborn but I used it super sparingly.

Has you LO ever had any allergy tests done? I know they say eczema is usually not related to food allergies but in DD's case, certain foods exacerbated her eczema - corn and peanuts both which came up positive in her skin allergy panel. I suspected these items even before the allergy panel from elimination diet. She's finally outgrowing the corn skin sensitivity but we will stay away from peanuts for a while longer. She just turned 2 and while she has two stubborn spots, they are mostly manageable and her skin is finally much better. I still have to rub her down with CeraVe lotion twice a day since she is prone to dry skin but it gets better so hang in there!

I cannot use Aveeno - I get a bad reaction, maybe because I have celiac and it contains wheat.... Anyway, my son had eczema too and I have been slathering on aquaphor after bath every night and it seems to be helping! I also do regular lotion (I use Mustela) and a few patches that were really bad I did hydrocortisone cream 2x a day.

You could also try washing her with goat milk soap. My cousin's baby had terrible eczema and my mom gave her some of the soap she makes and it completely cleared up his eczema. He was on prescriptions for it and everything!

You can probably get some non scented goat milk soap on Etsy or look for a local person that sells it. It has become a popular hobby business for people!

Xander can't use Aveeno either - it caused rashes and made everything worse!

I use Aquaphor mainly to treat Xander's eczema, but sometimes when I need to get more aggressive, I use a hydrocortisone ointment.

And in order of keeping things moisturized, ointments are better than creams, and creams are better than lotions! So stick with Aquaphor or other ointments. And definitely if she's scratching at it, try a hydrocortisone ointment to help with the itching and really lock in the moisture.
