My water broke as my first sign of labor. It was when I was getting out of bed in the morning (on a Sunday). At first I didn't know if I'd peed myself, or my water had broke! Haha. I didn't get contractions for another 14 hours, so I definitely wasn't in any sort of rush. My water didn't stop leaking after that initial gush until I actually birthed DD, soooo gross and slimy.

I would suggest keeping some big bertha pads with you in case your water does break while you're out. Also, some junky towels you can throw down in all cars you drive/ride in.

If my work was in the same city I was delivering then I would have no problem working till I went into labour. However I live/work 1hr 45min from the hospital so I just hope I make it!
With DD1 my water broke just before pushing and DD2 it broke during pushing.

@beesknees: that sounds so scary!! i'm glad everyone was calm at the dinner party.

I'm "favoriting" this thread to re-read when I'm scared of the water breaking scenario again. And yes - coworker does like drama!

My water breaking was my first sign of labor. The good news is that it happened at 4am. The bed news is that it was a steady stream and I soaked through multiple pads, towels, underwear - whatever I stuffed down there to try to contain it! It would NOT have been pretty had I been at work.

It's different for everyone though!

I teach, and am working until the last day of school. Opted out of a summer assignment and into disability, since I'll be having DD just a few weeks later (assuming she's not early). I'd work until the end, if my due date was sooner.

co-workers are crazy!! I had two co-workers tell me how nervous they were for me to work up until my due date because 'what if you go into labor here?! what would we do?!' I said you'll do nothing haha. my husband works less than 5 minutes away. and if it's a real emergency there is a hospital less than 10 away that has a labor and delivery floor.

Sounds like your coworker is being dumb and wanting attention/drama.

I had planned to stop working 3 weeks before my due date, but I was bored and needed at work so I took on small projects and worked part off the day from home and came in when I felt like it.

I got super uncomfortable driving my 40 minute commute at 39 weeks, so I told them I was done and would start leave then. My water broke the next day at home, it soaked my clothes, but did not splash everywhere. My first sign was bloody show/mucus plug with water breaking 2 hours later, and contractions starting 2 hours after that.

I would have been ok driving until 2 hours after my water broke, when contractions started. I wasn't worried about it gushing at work, we are animal people, it's hard to shock my coworkers and we had a fire department across the street.

i had the crazy gush. but had enough time to scoot into the restroom. I felt like a tiny pop and crossed my legs and jetted to the rest room - and the water was crazy. I kept getting up to call someone to help, but then the gush would start again. I was at a dinner party.......,I was super embarrassed. Everyone was very very very calm and wonderful about it.
Your co-workers will get over it. Its life. maybe pack a heavy duty pad in your bag to help soak it up in case it happens. But I have heard it is a small % that does happen too

I was in the minority in that my water broke and it was my first sign of labor - contractions came soon after. I was sleeping in bed @ 4:30am. Not a gush of water but I woke up immediately and knew what had just happened. The gush came about 20 mins later while I was on the phone with my doctor. I think the odds of something like this happening at work is really slim (I was worried about it too!!) and if it does happen, chances are it will be something only you notice. Just high tail it to the bathroom with your cellphone to call for back-up (this we may plan lol). I also was going to bring a towel to sit on at work just in case but never got around to it.

@belleoftheballe: oh yeah, they were manageable. I don't think she would have done all that if they were REALLY bad. But, it was her second, so she already know how her body responds in labor (how fast she's likely to deliver, etc).

I imagine it's much more difficult the first time around when you don't know what to expect, don't know how fast you'll progress, etc.

My company doesn't give any maternity leave until the day your baby is born. And my manager didn't let me work from home.

I was at work until noon, then gave birth at 4pm (via emergency C-section). It kinda sucked being overdue but I didn't want to use my precious vacation days since I wanted to save them for when the baby was here.

My water broke in a gush, outside of the hospital for my first. However, my managers at the time were very concerned for me going into labour at work and possibly alone (I worked very long hours, mostly by myself til 8p). They tried to tell me it was an insurance thing that I should finish work a month early. I worked ten minutes from my hospital at the time. I was in no danger of not being able to get to the hospital.

My water broke as the first sign. A pad would not have cut it. It was two small gushes followed by a giant gush that soaked my pants and splashed over the floor. Sorry, lol, that's probably not reassuring!!! I would bring a change of clothes.

My sister went into labor on a Sunday...then went to church, went out to eat, went to a few different stores looking for a ballet costume for her older child (whose recital was the next week, and she was worried she wouldn't have time once her second baby arrived)....and then finally went to the hospital after getting the costume and had her baby just 3 hours later!

So you usually have some notice. =) Good luck!!

I worked until a week before I was due. Last day was a Friday, went into labor the following Tuesday night and DS was born Wednesday morning. I could have taken off as much as a month before my due date but I was feeling really good, so decided to work as long as possible to save my maternity leave.

My first sign of labor was my water breaking while I was peeing. I thought I was done, then I heard a pop and a gush of water came out into the toilet. Luckily I was on the toilet!

I worked right up till the end! I wanted to maximize my time off w baby. I went into labor on a Sunday night and worked up till that Friday. My water broke and it did feel like a gush- totally felt like I peed myself! I guess there is always the chance your water could break at work and it might be more than a trickle so you could def try wearing a pad for the last couple wks for peace of mind. I doubt you would soak through a pad.

My neighbor's water breaking was the first indication of labor with both her kids. The first time it broke while she was at school (kindergarten teacher) just about ready to get her kids lined up for lunch; luckily she was sitting down and just scooted her chair over to the phone to call for help from the office. The second time she was getting out of her car to get dinner with her mom.

Oh, this is on my mind as I'm 10 days from my due date and planning to work as long as possible. I'm mostly just scared of my water breaking at work or in public - I work very close to home so could get there no problem if I just started to have real contractions.

This thread is reassuring in that the statistics about labor rarely starting with water breaking being pretty accurate.

My water broke after working a full day while I was carrying my daughter inside for night time. It wasn't a huge gush that flooded the ground, more like a "ohmygosh did I just pee myself?"! And, even though I was a c-section, I didn't actually feel any contractions after that! So, I wouldn't be worried :)
