I make this bread every year bc it gets rave reviews: http://www.mommyskitchen.net/2008/12/holiday-eggnog-bread-one-of-my-favorite.html?m=1

I add a thick glaze that's just powdered sugar thinned with rum and let it harden on the cooled cakes overnight. I bake them in mini loaf pans (Reynolds makes disposable ones) and then pop them out of the tins to glaze. I pack them naked in cellophane treat bags with twist ties on the end once the glaze is hardened.

The best part is they freeze unglazed just perfectly wrapped in Saran Wrap. So then I just let them thaw completely (otherwise the glaze with weep) and then glaze them when I need them. It is literally the most delicious thing with coffee around the holidays.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: those are too cute!

@erinbaderin: oh I loved spiced nuts- good idea. We don't have a Target near us yet, otherwise I'd be there ASAP! It's probably better for my wallet, whenever we're somewhere with Target I spend way too much time there.

@Mrs D: thank you for all the ideas and the link! I forgot all about some of those treats and never thought to look at Real Simple.

@blackbird: that sounds amazing! I'd never heard of that idea before.

@mediagirl: thank you so much for clearing up my freezer mystification :)

I buy my packaging at Dollarama every year.

I'm not sure which I'll make this year, but usually 4-5 of these plus something new!
The must make every year for my family are my mini chocolate chip dipped shortbread sticks.
I usually make chocolate rum balls, but if we manage to get knocked up by then, I'll probably not.
Favourites from past years have been:
candycane cookies
cookiedough balls
snickerdoodles
Peanut butter thumbprint
Surprise Kiss Pockets (Hersheys kisses hidden)

I also ALWAYS make my husband multiple batches of nuts and bolts

New this year I"ll make some Snowflake shaped shortbread cookies to go with the cutter we used for dd frozen themed birthday party.

So we make a TON of cookies. On our normal list is:

Buckeyes
Creme De Menthe squares
Kris Kringle (our cut out cookies)
Gingerbread men/kids
Russian Tea Cakes
Snickerdoodles
Cracker Brittle
Peppermint Bark
Khalua Cake

Seriously...I literally used to make all of these each year and package them up for people. This was pre-kids.

Not sure who will make the cut this year but snickerdoodles, buckeyes and cracker brittle always make it. The rest I rotate!

My packaging varies year by year. Real Simple has some great inspiration. As does the container store. I am getting more into complete DIY tho this year.

*For our close some local friends, my boss, and DH's co-workers I will make a full size bundt - either Khalua Cake or Coffee Cake. I do one wrap of a cute ribbon (against the way the box folds) and seal with a label.

*For our local 'family' friends (i.e. more than 2 people), a few family members I do boxes of treats. These include some of each "cookie" plus a mini bundt of khalua cake

*Everyone Else (mail man, UPS man, dog walkers, DC teachers) cookies will be packaged this year in mason jars of different sizes (depending on the overall gift). I like to give something homemade to each person during the season. I also make a few extra to have on hand for last minute oops's. I think I will decorate these with fabric, rustic yard and a brown paper/chalk tag.

Supplies as follows: Boxes (cake size and cookie size) from Container Store, ribbon/tags/fabric - JoAnns/Michaels, Mason Jars - Meijer.

Now - I just need to develop my plan and find the time!!! I think it will be the weekend of Dec 12 this year!

@akcoffeebean: to freeze cookies - wrap them in saran wrap and then put them in a ziplock freezer bag. For extra protection, put the freezer bag into a tupperware container. :) That's how I froze the Christmas cookies I made last weekend

I am going Pioneer Woman style this year and doing cinnamon rolls in the throwaway metal tins and freezing them for gifts. I've bought the plastic boxes in the past and such, but i also don't want to spend a ton on packaging. So this year, i'm just doing the basic type with some bows.

I make my Papa's shortbread cookies and candied pecans every year, but I don't really give them out, I just make them for my family to eat. Target usually has cute little Christmas tins, that might be good for packaging?

I'm not baking any cookies of my own, but will re-package chocolate covered snowflake pretzels that Crate & Barrel sells.
My game plan is to get small cellophane bags and tie them with holiday ribbon. These will be favors at our Tree Trimming party.

Do you have a game plan yet for making holiday cookies and candies for gifting? I'm trying to put mine together and need suggestions and tips and tricks to make it easy. Every year I feel like I'm scrambling. I'd also love ideas for how to present cookies and candies when gifting.

On my list:
1) home made buckeye balls. They're like home made Reese's and I love that they're easy to make ahead and freeze. They keep really well and don't break when mailed or tossed around in the car. In the past I've stuck them in cupcake liners and them inside cookie tins.

2) Sugar cookies. I hate making them, but they're my husband's favorite. I make it a little easier by making shapes that only need one color of frosting. Last year it was stars and snowflakes with white royal icing and silver sanding sugar. The monochrome look also made it look fancier since there's nothing to mess up when icing.
I haven't found a nice way to package these though aside from on a platter. I'd like to make these ahead of time but am totally confused by how freezing cookies works.

3) one year I made Russian tea cakes to round out the mix. I didn't like how the powdered sugar that they're finished with got over all the other cookies. However, they're delicious.

4)Dark chocolate shortbread cookies with peppermint royal icing. Delicious and pretty. Plus, I think it's a good flavor balance with the other treats. But, I don't know how to present them to their best effect. Last time I made them I made them as roll cookies that I sliced into squares. Then I put them in cupcake liners. Kind of cute but I think it could be nicer. I'm sad that I can't find the recipe I used for these. If it rings a bell for you please help! It was an online recipe with butter and cocoa powder. I can't remember anything else about it or where I stumbled across it though. :(

What's on your list? How do you present your cookies and how do you pack the ones you mail?

Thanks for any tips or ideas, I think planning is half the fun for the holidays. Or maybe it's the anticipation of happiness while planning.
