Update: They came today and put down a bunch of traps so that is the good news--he also plugged some holes under the sink with steel wool. Bad news is we found evidence of more mice in a hall closet and in the corner of the baby's room (not arrived yet). He was pretty confident that hopefully this will take care of the problem. Fingers crossed!!

@matador84: it totally sucks, I had 2 toddlers and a newborn when we were dealing with the worst of it. Put your traps behind furniture along walls where the kids can't get them. Hope you get this cleared up quickly! It didn't take long for us to get them all once we realized it wasn't just 1 or 2

@MrsB2012: the escalation is my worst nightmare! I feel like where there is one there are twenty. Having kids and having the traps out also freaks me out. I'm sure I'm overreacting but I'm totally exhausted by it!

This is definitely turning into my biggest nightmare! I swear I didn't sleep last night. My dad came over this morning and was sitting on the couch looking into our backyard when he saw two small ones creep out from behind a shelf where we keep toys and then dart back behind it. So now just knowing that they are in a different part of the house also has me totally losing sleep. I might need to find a neighborhood cat to keep around until the pest people come tomorrow just so I can sleep at night!!

SO, I am going to call the pest company that we use tomorrow because we caught 4 mice this weekend in traps  and I am totally panicky about it. 1 in the empty pantry and 3 under the sink so I'm sure that's how they are getting in. I'm just so grossed out! I opened the cabinet today to get a trash bag and saw a huge (in my mind but I could be crazy) mouse running toward the back wall of the cabinet. Just between having kids and being pregnant it is something I want professionals to deal with as much as possible, especially if it's only 80 bucks!!! Ughhhhhhhh.

Ugh. So we moved into our house in January. In like march my husband saw a mouse and it escalated from there. We ended up killing a bunch. Those traps that a pp posted above have been the best for us, and super easy to reuse. We killed a ton and then didn't have any for probably 2 months, then we caught 2 tiny baby ones randomly on a sticky trap we left out for spiders. I called an exterminator then, they left a bunch of bait traps out and came back 2 weeks later to see where the movement was and none of the traps had been touched. He said if you see a crack/hole that you can fit a pencil through, then a mouse can fit through. Turns out our back door doesn't seal completely in the corner and he suspects that's how they were getting in our house. We're still working with them to make sure there's no other issues, but haven't had any since . But seal all gaps up, or use steel wood and then the foam spray as well. Keep traps out all the time so you can tell if they're coming back.

A mouse? There are sticky pads that get placed at a convenient position to trap a mouse/rat. Best to place it en route to a food source in your kitchen as the little fella will most def head there for a nibble some time.
Soon as he steps on it he's stuck until you hear his cry for help and free him. Won't hurt him but will have him at a place you can catch and throw him out!

We had a problem with mice every winter. My cat usually was good and killed them. Our cats actually showed us how they were getting in, which was a similar situation to you... separation in the floor to the cabinets. Mice can be tricky with the traps, I would just try to figure out how they are getting in. Professionals can also help do that.

@matador84: We have mice every new season. I actually thought a mouse in our attic was something bigger and had a post about it. It was just a tiny field mouse. Oops!

We set the traps that @MaryM: recommended. The trick is to put the peanut butter on the bottom of the bait pad. They have to work more to get it, and it triggers the trap. If you put it on the top, they can eat it right off without the trap being triggered. We caught a family of 5 in our basement, so be prepared that there's more than 1.

A company is just going to come out and set traps as well, so I'd save your money there. They likely won't come back once you've caught something...that will be your husband's job to dispose of!

We moved into a house last fall that had been uninhabited for a couple years. We quickly found evidence of mice living in 2 kitchen drawers. My husband set snap traps with peanut butter for bait and we got one in each drawer the first night! Reset the traps the next night and left for several weeks but have never caught more or seen evidence of others in the house. We never did anything to find where they were getting in, and were lucky enough to never find any more (so far!).

We had mice in our townhouse (rental) and I flipped out. We set out traps but also called a recommended service. They could provide and garuntee if it was a single family home but not for a place with shared walls. They ended up identifying two sources of entry (no where near our kitchen!) and sealing them up. They set out kills traps in strategic locations I never would have thought to put them. We caught zero mice before. We caught About 8 all in one location where they set traps. After that we (knock on wood) haven't had any issues since. I'd call another company to find one that will walk your property, find the source of entry, seal it and provide a garuntee of their work in addition to setting traps. Experts know what they are doing, especially if they stand behind their work.

The only thing that worked when we had nice in our brownstone were the electric shock traps. It's supposedly a quick kill (as opposed to glue traps), impossible for kids to hurt themselves on, and not very icky to clean up (just flip the lid open when the light is on and dump the mouse).

Thanks these are all good suggestions.
I'm convinced they are entering through/near the cabinet under the sink. Our house is older and was a flip and they cut the hole for the plumbing oddly which leaves a gap between the cabinet and back. This area looks out to a very small (maybe 4-5 feet across) area between mine and my neighbors house. She has neglected it forever so my husband mows and weeds back there but doesn't touch her area which is overgrown with vines and grass.

I think I'm just going to call a company because I don't want to deal with it and I want it dealt with asap! I'm so grossed out and I'm irritated I'm having to inspect and wash everything I cook with before I use it because I'm so paranoid the mice have been around it.

@MaryM: we have a brick exterior but because our house was a flip I can see there being venting on that side of the house so I'm going to tell DH to take a look.

I have a cat who is a sadist and likes to play with the mice we get before killing them. But I've also had luck with snap traps. Glue traps are pretty inhumane, they basically starve to death.

The last mouse we had (this week), I found it behind the door chewing on itself. It wasn't in a trap. It didn't even care that the cats were there. It was just ready to die. So I caught it in a mason jar and took it outside where at least something would eat it. I consider it a mercy kill at that point.

Something else to look at...we haven't had mice in our new house, but did have a garter snake get in (I'm not sure what's worse!)

There's ivy growing close to the house, and it got overgrown before we moved in. Some got under the siding and created a gap. Once DH filled that gap with foam we had a lot less bugs in general (and no more snakes!)

So if you have siding, check to make sure it's tight to the house at the bottom.

Glue traps are so much more inhumane than a standard trap.

We dealt with rats in our old house. Our landlords insisted on poison tucked away in the basement. We eventually had luck with standard traps, and sealing holes with foam.

Per the cat recommendation: we have a cat and two dogs, and all 3 were absolutely worthless when it came to dealing with mice/rats. :(

I second the advice about making sure your lawn is mowed. The only time I had mice in my old house was when my neighbors totally neglected their yard. They got into my house around the holes where the gas came into my house. If you can find areas like those, steel wool or aluminum foil works to keep them out.

Also, I got these traps. Supposedly they don't need bait, but I usually put peanut butter on them to make them more attractive. https://hw.menardc.com/main/items/media/SCOTT019/ProductLarge/33505.jpg

I was living alone, and liked that once it snapped shut, you didn't have to actually touch the mouse to get it out. You just pushed the clip back open and it would fall out.

We had this unfortunately. We did call someone as I was grossed out ha! They looked around the perimeter of the house inside and out and tried to locate how they were getting in. They then put steel wool in any little crevasse or opening and set traps in the garage, under sink, and in a space between walls in the basement. We caught 2-3 more and then nothing for the next 5 years we lived there.

If you want to DIY, look outside under and around siding, a/c, garages where they meet inside walls of your house, roof, dryer vents and plug up anything you can see even if it's tiny. Then set traps and wait...lots of pear places offer a guarantee if you go that route so they will come back if you keep finding them. We did snap traps with peanut butter as I could not have handled a live mouse in a glue trap   then I had a pair of rubber kitchen gloves and threw the whole trap into the garbage rather than use again.

eta: the pest company we hired did do a couple glue traps with this extremely potent bait goo in the middle. Maybe you haven't caught any as nothing is luring them to your traps?

Do you live in a house or an apartment? We had mice in our older home, and we had a company come in to see where they were coming through. They filled any vulnerable spots. They also set out poison traps (other types of traps grossed me out and the last thing i wanted was my kid accidentally stepping onto a glue trap), which i know isn't ideal with toddlers but at that time my daughter was good about not putting things into her mouth. I would make sure you don't have anything on the floors of the pantry to get a better sense of whether mice revisted. This sounds silly, but also keep your grass short so mice can't hide in the tall grass.

Hope you get rid of the mice soon!

So, I've been trying not to freak out, but...we went on vacation for a week and when we came back there was evidence of a mouse (or mice :bummed: ) that had been in our pantry. I cleaned out the pantry, threw almost everything away, and now are seeing signs of the mouse in a little area that's an open shelf where my cookbooks are stored.

DH set glue traps over the last week but we haven't caught anything. I called a local company and asked what they did for mice and they said they just set traps and bait which is the same thing DH has done. I'm freaking out because I'm having to sanitize my kitchen on the daily and I'm 30 weeks pregnant!!

Any advice? I've never had to deal with this before! We also have two toddlers so I want to avoid putting out anything they might get into.
