My oldest has an egg white allergy and it has gotten significantly better with time. When he was a baby I had to avoid eggs completely or he would get a rash and green poop. After a year it started getting better and he could very occasionally have a baked good that contained some egg and be ok. At two, I am giving him actual yolks with just a tiny bit of white. The thing that we've noticed is that when he has eggs his immune system is slightly depressed and he is more likely to get a cold. Essentially it's going away but we are still being careful. FWIW- the reason I am giving him some egg and not avoiding it completely is because there is recent research that you can help them build up a tolerance that way- but I would obviously check with your doctor before doing something like that.

@wheres_c: If you had a blood test done, then there are numbers associated. From those numbers doctors can take a guess as to whether or not kids can outgrow the allergy. My LO has had a total of three blood tests done and one prick test performed last week. He is a trooper.

LO has an egg intolerance. She can eat them in foods (like pancakes or cookies) but not by themselves - yolk or white. She last had them at 9/10 months, and we'll try again at 15 months, which is just a little over a week away. She reacts by puking... A lot. We tried 3 different times, but it wasn't until the third that we got a reaction strong enough for us to be concerned.

@yin: thanks for sharing.... So there are quantified numbers vs a yes/no, I guess?
As you know, we're in the process of a move so my doctor just called, I haven't seen the report. I guess I will see the numbers once she sends me the report.

I am glad to hear that the numbers have gone down. I eat vegetarian (formerly vegan) so it's not the end of the world to avoid them while I'm cooking.....I just hate for him to have to deal with that in school and as he gets older.

My LO is allergic to both whites and yolks (among other food allergies). When he was younger I noticed a slight reaction but nothing major. When he has cow's milk or peanuts his mouth gets red and itchy. Sometimes his eye will get red and swollen as well. So the egg allergy isn't as severe as the rest.

I make sure to avoid eggs in what I cook for him. Since he is also allergic to cow's milk, it's easier for me to look for vegan products. I use flax meal in place of egg in a lot of recipes as a binder.

So far the numbers have gone down. There is a hope he will eventually outgrow it.

As some of you may know, B was recently tested for environmental and food allergies based on what we thought was a reaction to my friends dog.

Since our insurance covered testing for food allergens too, we went ahead for curiosities sake.

Our doctors called today, and apparently he is mildly allergic to egg whites!
She told us to avoid them and then get him retested in 6 mo to a year. She also prescribed an epipen just in case.

I haven't noticed a reaction, and have fed him scrambled eggs once, and several items containing egg...including French toast this morning.

Obviously we will comply and avoid egg altogether. I read that most children grow out of it by age 5.

Anyone else's LO have an egg allergy? How did you handle it? What sort of reaction did he they have?
