For example I had a fervent discussion with DH’s aunt who is a cancer survivor last Christmas about pre-existing conditions and the fact that the Trump administration is actively trying to overturn the ACA. She believes he’s going to enact something on pre-existing conditions because “nobody wants that to go away” and he says he has a plan. But also believes Obamacare has to go because “it’s a disaster” and her premiums still go up every year.</p> <p>If there’s one silver lining I feel like Clinton’s loss was less gender based than I did four years ago. Which makes me hopeful that the US might someday elect a woman.</p> <p>I am also really surprised by how well incumbents did overall in this garbage fire of a year. I’ll say I’m not liberal at all but I don’t like Trump and what he is doing to our institutions. But I read an article about exit polls - contrary to how it feels, people aren’t driven to vote for Trump - they are voting Republican based upon the platforms. Edited to correct that the number was 25% voted based on personality - 75% on issues. So this isn’t a referendum on Trump - that could be misleading. (Well not for 75% of the republican voters - the other 25% who like Trumps personality scare me). </p> <p>What we need to do is learn (again) to talk politics civilly with people we disagree with. That doesn’t mean bashing those who voted for one candidate or another.
