We had one done right after our anatomy scan. They couldn't tell us girl or boy at the anatomy scan, so I booked an elective scan to see if we had a better chance. We did! It was amazing- loved it.

We did one at 16 weeks to confirm what they already saw at the 12 week ultrasound. He was still a boy! The place was really nice and professional.

We did elective 4D scans at 15 weeks both times, it was very obvious that they were boys. It was a great experience!

@2PeasinaPod: @NurseDMB: I was offered a gender blood test as part of the NT scan/first trimester scan when I was pregnant with LO1 in 2011 (and not high risk). I had to pay out of pocket, but it was only $50.

I know the fetal DNA tests are very expensive and not always covered by insurance.

I suggested the blood test because of its high accuracy rate. I'm a little leary about early ultrasounds because I know three people that were told the incorrect gender at an early ultrasound (one was told she was having a boy to find out it was a girl and two friends were told they were having girls to later find out they were having boys)!

I had one at 17 weeks (had to wait until 22 weeks with regular doctor) and loved it! They had a comfy recliner with a huge TV that showed the ultrasound. She got some great shots and said they are 99% accurate. The best part was they taped the entire thing, including our reaction to the news, which is something I still cherish and love watching.

They stressed drinking a ton of water to get the best pictures and a little OJ beforehand to get baby moving around.

We didn't go to one or those ultrasound places but had an US at 16 weeks at my regular OB appt because DD's heartbeat wasn't being picked up on the Doppler. I wasn't concerned because I could feel her moving but they still wanted to do one.

It was just the portable machine so not high quality at all but it was super obvious she was a girl - both DH and I knew it but my midwife wouldn't confirm until the official gender/anatomy scan.

@Bluebonnet: The blood tests aren't always covered by insurance, and sometimes are only offered to women over 35.

@NurseDMB: I went yesterday, and I'm 15 weeks today. We saw clear as day that we were having a boy!

@Bluebonnet: No, my insurance won't cover it since I'm 28 and low risk, and out of pocket price is insane. :(

@NovBaby1112: Yep, I am! I had heard about the nub theory but wasn't sure how accurate it was. Hopefully she can get a good shot!

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I'm still going to do it and hopefully they will be able to tell! But I won't go out and buy clothes or anything until we confirm at our 19 week US

Are you having the NT ultrasound done at 12 weeks? ( I can't remember if you are or not!) If your tech has good equipment and gets a side shot, the nub theory is pretty accurate and is a good way to tell. It was right for my DD and right for this one!

We had a blood test done at 12 weeks that told us the gender. Could you do that instead? I think it would be much more reliable than an ultrasound at that point.

I had one with DS at 16 weeks. It was a nice place, ultrasound was done on a bed. She had me empty by bladder after taking a look, told DH she thought she knew but wanted a better look before telling us. I'm only 7 weeks right now but as long as I get the chance I'll probably do it again.

Anyone have an elective ultrasound done to find out the gender early on?

I found a place that will let you go at 15 weeks to find out the gender, if baby is in a bad position or they can't tell, you can come back the following week free of charge.

I did book it, I'm super impatient this time around! Just wondering what your experience was if you had one done.. Good and bad!

I'm expecting that if its a boy it will be pretty easy to tell by then, but Ive heard some stories of people being told girl, when it's really a boy.
