I figure, I've had the same electric toothbrush for 8+ years now, worth the investment to just get them something that they can use throughout their childhood. He LOVED it and wore the batteries out in two months. I bought him two oral B spin brushes for Christmas. But I did have to let him open one last week when his other one quit working. I'm pretty sure you can change the batteries on the Oral B ones.
