My SIL brought her elf in our trip to disney world a few years ago. They woke up their first morning there and the elf was sitting by the tv. Isn't the thing that the elves travel to report to Santa each night, so you think they'd come back to wherever you are at.

Last year we had to travel to house hunt the weekend before Christmas, so we brought him. But, I had a four year old. I don't know if my two (almost three year old) really noticed. But, it's super easy to pack, bring it!!! Christmas only gets more exciting and more fun as they get older :) I can't wait for this year!

@Smurfette: Cute! I'm pretty sure having my mom get one is the obvious solution I didn't think of for some reason, haha! I just wonder if LO would ask about it if we are road tripping and staying in a hotel. I guess in a couple months we can see what she's like and go from there.

@MrsRoo: Cute! That makes sense :)

You could also just have your Mom buy one for her house. Then she can put it out for LO and you don't have to worry about traveling with it.

My brother and SIL would bring their elf with them when they came down at Christmas. A lot of time they drove over night. One would run in the house and hide the elf while the other got the kids out of the car, it would be like 6 am when they got there. They just told them that the Elf follows them to every house they stay at.

My SIL started elf on the shelf when her youngest was around 2.5. It included a week plus trip to grandmas house and they brought the elf. We spent several days with them and the kids were still all excited about the magic of the elf, so I think having the elf "know" that you're out of town and showing up at grandmas probably adds to it's magic somehow.

@PinkElephant: @mediagirl: I have a 2 year old with a very active (and literal) imagination. This is the girl that every day at nap time feeds, rocks, and changes the diapers of all her baby dolls and covers them with blankets... and will always remember if she left one in the bathroom. Then when she wakes up, if I take her to go potty or do something else before she can wake up the babies, she will realize "babies still sleeping!" and freak out. So the elf at home watching over our house would not fly with her.

@mediagirl: Yes, it is :) We called LO a nugget for a while when I was pregnant so I changed my icon to that and it's been that way for over 2 years! It is also a very graceful chicken nugget, balancing in the way it is!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: It sounds fun but also like a recipe for my drama queen to stress out, haha!

I feel like the easiest solution is to just have the elf show up once we get to grandma's. But I am a little too excited about all this and don't want to wait that long!

Don't lose the Elf! As Santa's helper the Elf should definitely road trip it with you and move all around your parents' house. Sounds really fun!

Doesn't the elf have magical powers (kinda like Santa) that gets him where he needs to be? I think 2 is sort of young for that kind of thinking but always, always fall back on magic. :)

And if you forget to take him with you, no worries, he's watching over your house at home, waiting for you to come home.

I don't think two is old enough to question how the elf got there...but if you're concerned, sure...let the Elf ride in the car with you! I can't see why not!

However, if you're not sure you've got a month of elf antics in you...claiming he lives at grandma's (or couldn't come to grandma's) would limit the time you need to come up with ideas (or give you a break).

I want to do Elf On The Shelf this year. If it's not for you, totally cool. I feel great about it :) This Christmas has me so excited!

However, I'm wondering if my 2 year old will be able to wrap her head around it when you throw in traveling to another state for Christmas. We'll probably go to my parents' for at least a week so I'm wondering if we should just do it once we get there? Or make a show of the elf traveling with us? What about when we stay in a hotel during our road trip? Our poor elf is going to get lost, ha!
