@Weagle: Personally, we like the Baby Bjorn chair for the infant stage. It has a nice high back for supporting babies who may uncomfortable ir unable to sit on their own. It also has a nice little rounded horn in front for babies to hold onto, so it feels very secure to them. Also, DD has been potty trained for over a year, and she still uses her chair. We ended up buying DS his own chair because she didn't want to share hers ( although she uses the big toilet about 90% of the time)!

A close second would be a high quality potty seat like the Baby Bjorn potty seat. It fits snugly onto most toilet seats and again has the horn in front for extra security.

Unfortunately, we lost ours in our recent move. We ended up replacing it with a very cheap character potty seat from Wal-Mart. I would not recommend the cheap seats for an infant. They tend to slip/slide around the toilet seat instead of fitting securely and besides the side handles, they have no additional security features. We do use the cheap potty seat with our toddler, but it doesn't seem safe enough for use with our infant.

@Honeybee: I've been told that the Baby Bjorn potty chair is awesome for EC. I really don't want to buy one. Do you think one of the little seats that fits on the toilet would be okay? I'd have to hold her there, obviously,

@hellocupcake: There are two basic "methods" to EC'ing. The first is to observe your LO during diaper-free times to pick up on elimination "cues"; little signs that your LO is about to poop or pee. The other method is to put your LO on the potty during the times of day s/he is most likely to go; usually before/after naps, meals, outings, baths, etc... This is the method we use; I never have been able to read my kids' cues, so using a loose schedule is best for us.

Starting by putting her on right after she wakes up in the morning is a great idea! Typically, we wait 5-10 minutes depending on how happy DS is to stay on the potty. We try to keep the potty very positive, so if he starts to get antsy I will try to distract him with songs/books/finger games/etc... but I take him off when it's obvious he doesn't want to sit there anymore. I think the more often you put your LO on the potty, the sooner you'll see results and the more comfortable both of you will be with using EC over diapers. As long as you keep it positive, there's nothing wrong with putting your LO on the potty as many times a day as works into your schedule!

@honeybee- how long do you keep her over the potty? And is it counterproductive to do it too often? (: thank you.

My plan for now is to start mornings. When she wakes up try holding her over the potty, since she is pretty consistent with her morning peeing (: would that be a good start? I can't seem to notice any cues so far /:

We did EC with DD starting at 3/4 months. she was completely potty trained by 18 months. We started with DS at 2 months and hope to potty train him by the end of the year (21 months). We're very relaxed about it (I say we are part time EC'ers since we also use dIaposable diapers) and with both kids we've taken breaks at times when they seem less interested.

I'd recommend an EC book such as The Diaper Free Baby or Diaper Free Under Three. I'd also be happy to answer any questions you might have!

I have a cousin who did this with her baby with some pretty good success-- in fact my husband had no clue it wasn't the norm and has decided that we will do it too. The way she handled it was to keep cloth diapers on baby but she was able to read her daughter's cues for #2 almost always and #1 most of the time. Her daughter was completely potty trained (night as well) by 2-- it isn't super early but my understanding was it was a pretty easy process. I figure it can't hurt to give it a try especially if you don't stress about hitting the 100% success mark.

I've read about it and would love to start using EC with my LO but he always seems to poop in his sleep or just as he's getting up! It's rare that I actually see him poop! I recently pinned some potty training tips...let me go find it.

Has anyone heard of this? Tried this? Have any tips?
I feel really guilty about using disposable diapers and was thinking this might be a good compromise, use disposables as little as possible.

Here is the Wikipedia page..I know it might not be the most reliable source but it gives a general idea...
