I think an email could be acceptable, but is definitely somewhat crude compared to a handwritten note. I guess it depends on who the recipient is. Also, getting an email thank-you is definitely better than no thank-you at all so it depends on how you look at it!

@Red: Oooh that's the benefit of having a December baby! Nice!!
Having a January baby, we get to put the invites in with the Christmas cards.

I am beginning to solidify in my mind that birthdays are different than weddings (b/c of the amount of planning/cost/frequency). Baby birthdays are also different than older kid birthdays because the older they get, the more they can 'help' with them, plus the number of guests usually go down.

This whole issue is very interesting to me...it's one of those never-knew-till I-was-a-parent-myself moments.

Also we had over 50 thank yous to write...and still gotta raise a non-sleepy baby.

I'd be perfectly fine with an emailed thank you but then again, I'm not in the habit of sending out thank you cards.......unless it's for a wedding or some other special event. Since my LO's birthday is in Dec, we simply added a thank you to the Christmas cards we sent out.

I might have e-mailed thank yous for a younger generation but for older folks I'd do a handwritten note. If you're really worried about your handwritting you could always type them, put it in a card and sign both the card and letter.

Kind of a follow up if anyone cares...it was nice because I got a few great email replies from people re: the party and some that set up get-togethers. We really didn't have time to talk at the party so I'm looking forward to it.
There are some great advantages to emailing thank yous for birthday parties. Wish it was a social norm by now. (Not necessarily weddings-we didn't do that--that's different.) I also included some of the emails with digital pic of their kids in action.
Oh and I have 3 more to go....Whew!

Good comments to mull over.
Well today I emailed a bunch and didn't feel guilty. I just called 3 of the VIPs for a verbal emotional gush of appreciation. Haven't decided if I will also send a written note. Probably.

I'm delegating a few thank-yous to my husband so he can decide and finishing up the rest of my list tonight (ideally) and this weekend (likely). Prompt ones are more fun for me to write because gratitude is flowing through my veins like an adrenaline jolt and also I can add special touches and sparkling conversation fodder. Email is great b/c then I'm not self-conscious about my lousy handwriting and can fix my errors. So there you have it...the times gotta catch up with me. And yes, there MIGHT ( a big maybe) be some people less likely to give gifts in the future but I'm really OK with that.

@googly-eyes: Yes, I was thinking that b/c it was so big (family and all in the 808 state and beyond) that is a good excuse to email, because of the size.

Can't wait til LO is old enough to write (or email) her own. I'd definitely make her handwrite some to practice addressing envelopes and develop her handwriting skills. She probably inherited a bad gene from me in that dept.

so funny how times have changed. people care so much about getting thanked. i know the people i give gifts to are thankful. i don't need a card to acknowledge that. i actually think it's a waste of money, but i guess i "have" to do it.

@googly-eyes: You still write thank you's for weddings, Bar Mitzvah's (sp) and the like. The size shouldn't prohibit a nice handwritten note.

I've always sent handwritten thank you cards. But I've been to birthday parties where I've been given just a verbal thank you for coming to the party and for the gift. And I was fine with that too. But handwritten cards are always nice to receive. So I would do that too.

@chopsuey119: my mom and mil don't expect a card from me (but I did write my mil one before I got married ) but if a cousin or friend doesn't send one they no longer get a gift. They feel like they didn't appreciated it enough to write a thank you, so why should my mom bother sending something else.

I personally think thank you notes (hand written) are very important. I would be a little turned off if I never received one for a present I gave a child or if I got a thank you through email. It doesn't matter how bad your handwriting is, it's the thought and time that you put into it that counts.

I think a verbal, "thank you" at the party is sufficient. I don't expect a thank you card when I give people gifts and I wish others wouldn't expect them either. :P
Maybe it's my Korean upbringing, but I've only sent out thank you cards for my wedding and baby shower gifts.
I'll definitely send out 1st bday thank yous if people from out of state send her anything. But I don't plan on sending thank yous to our guests. I'll just thank them at the party.. :P Oh actually, I'm giving everyone a party favor and plan on putting a little "thank you for celebrating M's 1st birthday with us!" tag on it. :)

I wouldn't mind an email thank you but maybe some older folks would prefer hand written ones. The last big first birthday I went to I didn't get a thank you at all. My parents did so maybe that was supposed to be mine too, although DH (then fiance) and I gave $50 cash and a toy on our own..

We had a huge party but I am going to send almost all the thank yous by email. They are less generic because I will write more by typing (my handwriting is horrrible) and quicker. Anyway, does anyone else do this or am I the only one? Is this really bad manners? If you have had a birthday party for your kiddo, I want to know your honest opinion.

LO was born a few weeks after Christmas so we made handmade (literally handprint-stamped) thank you cards for those gifts. It's just so overwhelming to get so many gifts at once and I really want to show my gratitude right away.

On that note...does anyone just call in thank yous in lieu of sending a note (email or snail) for baby birthdays? Have any of you been on the receiving end...what do you think? Is it an issue? Just wondering...
