I recently went to one a few weekends ago, and got them bulldog salt and pepper shakers from Pottery Barn (they have a bulldog). I totally feel you on the $100 restaurant cards and fancy bottles of champagne, but lesser expensive gifts can be just as nice. Why not order one of those fancy personalized wedding dress hangers from Etsy? Or something small but nice, like a small something from Michael Aram or Tiffanys. You can get nice things for under $50. And if the gift is more geared towards the bride-to-be, I wouldn't worry about that. In the past, I've skipped the gift at the engagement party &amp; just done a shower gift as well as a wedding gift.
