Thanks guys! The pediatrician told me to pump once a day to keep things moving. I'm getting an ounce each day from the breast so far.

Lasted for 10 days. Then my boobs went back to feeling soft (unless she sleeps for a long time and then they get engorged again).

@dc yoga bee: You may need to hand express a bit to make it easier for her to latch. My first had a very hard time latching when my milk came in. And it does get better. I'm two weeks pp now and I still have some swelling in my armpits (so weird!), but my boobs are back to a normal size!

Mine lasted a while the first time around! And even now with my second whoa alms or 6m if he sleeps longer than normal at night I get a little engorgrd. Keep doing what you are doing and offer the side she doesn't like first. It's easier to feed off of a less engorged boob so that might be the problem. You might also pump just enough to relieve the engorgement. Congrats!

Totally normal. Breast tissue continues up under your armpits, and you will get engorged there, too. It's also normal for babies to have a boob preference. Mine has preferred my left side from the start. I now have more supply on the left side because it regulated on its own. I don't usually get painful engorgement now at 8 weeks, but did last night because LO STTN (7 hrs) for the first time. It'll get better, just keep bringing baby to breast, hand expressing, and other tricks mentioned above. Hot showers and cold compresses worked for me.

Bump!!! My milk came in on Wednesday. Here it is Friday, and they are still huge and painful. LO will hardly nurse on the left side. At first, she refused it, but now she's nursing from it somewhat. I'm not sure if there is a clogged duct or just general engorgement? The breast is large, and I don't know if what I feel is a lump, or just general tenderness? I've been using heat and cold, massaging and warm showers. I also have engorgement under my armpits! Is this normal!?!

@coacheswife123: I never tried ice, but heat helped me... hot showers and booby tubes (Earth Mama Angel Baby). My lactation consultant said that it's not all milk that's making you engorged... it's also inflamation due to hormones... you just have to get through it. I agree with pp that ibuprofen helps... my OB said I could take 4 at a time. You should feel better in 1-3 days.

Congrats!!!

Don't worry, it will regulate. I think I was super engorged for a few days. DS is 3 months and I still get engorged from time to time when he goes longer in between feedings.

Mine was 24 hours. We iced with frozen veggie bags and hand massaged... the next day it starte softening. I still get engorged in the mornings if DS gets a bottle for his night time feeding.

It lasted a long time for me... Maybe two weeks? I Also had a million other issues going on tho. Try cabbage leaves for short periods of time. And yes it will regulate and you will feel normal again!

It will regulate :) I think it took a good week for it to become more tolerable and then weeks after that if I went too long in between feedings it would be uncomfortable, but not as painful like in the beginning.

Oh yes!! That first 24 hours is hell!! Use ice (I used the perenial ice packs I got from the hospital) and take some ibuprofen. It will definitely be better tomorrow. I slept sitting up because the pressure was so much. Good luck!!! And congrats!!!!!!

How long did your engorgement last once your milk came in ? Mine came in today and my chest is SO TIGHT and my boobs are huge and hard! We are feeding and that helps but he gets full and stops eating/falls asleep before we can totally empty !!

It will regulate, right ??
