I took my almost 3 year old to an ENT a few weeks ago after a prolonged ear infection and nonstop sniffles and they didn't recommend surgery but said that her adenoids are enlarged. They did mention that they can grow back, and to give her more time to grow, but that the surgery itself is pretty simple for kids and they're usually back to normal within a few days. I had mine out when I was about her age after similar issues and not sure it helped all that much, honestly.

My 4 year old had her adenoids taken out when they put in her 2nd set of tubes. She was 2.5 at the time. It was much harder on me than it was on her. They said she had a lot of bio-film around them, so it was a good thing we took them out.

@My Only Sunshine: OMG that's really interesting, Braces would definitely cost more than the surgery.

@pinkelephant: Interesting fact that they grow back, I might actually not mind that because adenoids do have a job to do in our bodies. Hopefully, they just won't grow back enlarged.

I feel a lot better now, knowing a few of you ladies actually have first hand experiences. we will have another appt tomorrow and maybe discuss other/more options with their pediatrician because the enlarged adenoids could affect his speech even more and that alone is enough to make to me give consent to the surgery...Speech therapy is no fun.

Going gluten and histamine free has made a big difference for my friend's preschooler. She was advised not to take his adenoids out at this age because they can grow back - I didn't know that!

I had enlarged adenoids that caused me to have sleep apnea. I had the surgery when I was 11 or 12. I spent one night in the hospital and then felt crummy for a day or two after that. Once they were out my sleep really improved.

@Apex: My brother had this done as a child (maybe 4 or 5). He had a number of respiratory issues and the enlarged adenoids were causing further problems. The surgery was pretty quick and I don't think recovery was too bad. It definitely helped him breath easier.

@Apex: I had this as a kid. I wish my parents had it taken care of when I was younger (they didn't know about the issue when I was young). I finally had the surgery when I was 12 when my orthodontist told them my adenoids were a problem. But until then I snored like an old man and the mouth breathing gave me an overbite that required extensive orthodontic work. Even as an adult I mouth breathe at night as a leftover habit.

The surgery itself wasn't bad from what I recall. I don't have much experience with trying to fix it naturally, unfortunately.

@Apex: is your son in day care? My son was fine till he went to day care, and as soon as he started it's like he was sick more often than not. Teething didn't help matters either.

We didn't change his diet. He wasn't sick when he started the course, so no obvious difference (but the doctor could see a difference when he looked in his nose). We saw a huge difference a few months later, when cold season started and he didn't come down with a gazillion ear infections.

@Mama Bird: That is good news, except that he has never had an ear infection. No fluids in his ears either.
How long into the month long course did you notice a difference? Also did you have to change his diet?

My son had this. We went to the ENT after a year of non stop ear infections. The ENT put him on a month long course of antibiotics... apparently the shorter courses he got for the ear infections weren't clearing up the problem all the way. The follow up appointment slowed they shrank enough that he didn't need surgery. We also made sure he got lots of fresh air that summer... maybe that helped too! I think he hasn't grown out of the problem completely yet, but he's not having ear infections every month, which is a huge improvement!

My 2yr old son is one of those kids with a constant runny nose. As in, constant. Runny. Nose.
He usually has to breathe through his mouth and snores really loudly.
We tried antibiotics and allergy meds and nothing worked. His pediatrician assured us that he was sure to grow out of it, but I got tired of waiting and took him in to an ENT. Turns out he has enlarged adenoids and while we can wait another 5-10years for him to grow out of it, She suggested Adenoidectomy-Surgery to take out his enlarged adenoid tonsils.

Has anyone else gone through this? I'm not sure I want to have him do the surgery and I'm hoping someone else had tried something else that worked.....besides waiting it out.
