@Andrea: Yes I want them to know their culture and heritage really. I cant make them learn a ton of Chinese as I myself dont even know much after 10+ years of Chinese school too! I cant read or write so I dont even stress that I just want them to know where they came from and the heritage they are inheriting.

My BIL is German, his mother was born there and speaks it but he and his siblings dont

@Mrs. Chocolate: DH is German (but doesn't speak) and I am Chinese. The kids also go to Mandarin school every Sunday! They can't learn a ton just going that one day, but I think the cultural exposure is important, too. I really want them to be familiar with both cultures!

@Mamaof2: Yes my son ate lunch at school when he was in pre school one year but it was only 2 days a week (pizza Wed) and I hated packing lunches lol. The only good thing about my son is he is a very consistent and boring eater so basically just a PB&J sandwich and some fruit and sometimes cheese or crackers. Still its a pain and I kind of want to expand his variety.

@Andrea: Oh thats interesting. Are you or DH German? The one by me thats too far and expensive is Chinese which I am (my kids are half) I thought it would be so interesting for them to attend if we could afford it and I didnt have to drive them. Yes I imagine if its 50% now they will adjust easily since they are hearing it a lot anyway. My son attends Chinese school on Saturdays like I did as a kid and I am doing it more because my mom wants me to and as much as I disliked it as a kid I do regret how little Chinese I know now as an adult. He doesnt mind either so I dont want to discourage it when he is younger but I know from my own experience it isnt enough to really make a huge impact.

@Mrs. Chocolate: we live in the US, but became interested in immersion anyway once we decided on private school. We have a German and French school by us and we chose German. I imagine that we'll be dealing with some frustrations with the language in the first few months, but the 50% immersion has been going well so far so I am not too worried.

@.twist.: I wish they would do away with it! I have read so much about how its not that beneficial in elementary school

@Mamaof2: Our boys rarely have homework! We were so suspicious at first (because both my husband and I went to school that loaded us with hours of homework each night!) and when we asked the teachers about it they said they try to give "homework" periods during the day where the kids can catch up. It's bizarre. lol

@Mrs. Chocolate: We don't do the bus - DS does before and after care at his school.

Lunches have been hard and still are - DS isn't much of cold food eater so, yeah. He wont eat cafeteria food either. :bummed:

I was worried about homework but its just 1 page Mon-Thur and no homework on the weekends - usually just takes a few minutes to do. I made up a pencil box with pencils, markers, erasers, pencil sharpener, scissors, and glue - so when he sits down to do homework he has everything he could possibly need

@Mamaof2: Aww thanks. Yes doesnt seem to be a lot of older kids yet on the Bee. Slowly working there I guess. Im a little nervous for my son on the transition of riding the bus with all the other grades (Kindy has its own separate bus), making school lunches every day, and how he will fare in a longer day. Lots of questions and concerns and Im sure even more once the year starts.

@Andrea: Yeah its seems not. Nice to meet you though! What language is the full immersion in? Sorry I dont know but do you not live in the US? Im so curious about this full language immersion thing. Its not very common in my area and I only know of one about 45 minutes away and its very pricey and way too far and out of our budget to even consider. Are you worried about the big changes of both full immersion and a longer day?

Probably not many of us! I will have a 1st grader, too. Her biggest change will be that 1st grade is full language immersion. Right now she still has 50% of the day in English. Otherwise, she already does full day.

@Mrs. Chocolate: Just in case there aren't any others I thought I would post here - my DS is in 1st grade this year - first full day since K is only 1/2 day.

If you have any questions I would be happy to share details about our experience!

This is kind of a spin off of the Kindy thread. I would love to chat with other moms with kids entering first grade. For us its a big deal as kindy here is in a separate school all by itself (with the pre school program) and is only half day so next year first grade will be the first time my son is in full day school and we will be dealing with other grades as well as school lunches etc. I would love to chat with other parents with children the same age as we embark on this big transition into first grade.
