I don't think you're risking a clogged duct or mastitis (although I get clogs occasionally (at 3x a day). I just have to make sure to squeeze empty once every day or two. But I do think supply will decrease. I was a little surprised at how much lower my supply was at 3 pumps vs 4 (about 5 ounces).

I don't have an answer, but I'm interested to know. I'm also exclusively pumping and have a 9-month-old. I went down to three pumps a day a few weeks ago and it has been the best thing ever. So now I'm very tempted to try going down to two but I'm afraid I'll lose too much output.

I did this when I was pump weaning (it took me a month!) I pumped in the morning and before bed. Then just in the morning. I never got a clogged duct. GL!

LMW is 9 months now and I'm exclusively pumping. She drinks just a tad more than my daily output so between that deficit and throwaway milk (usually left over from her bedtime bottle that I can't save til the next day) I only have to supplement from my stash about once every 2-3 days.

I'm trying to do the math but I haven't been keeping track of how much frozen stash I've used so far (I guess I'll just have to go home and count it!). I'm hoping to decrease to 2 pumps a day. My output is usually about 7 oz 3x a day, so about 20-22 oz per day. I'm guessing that if I reduce to 2 pumps a day and my milk production doesn't take a TOTAL dive because of it, I'll get about 15-18 oz per day, which means I'll probably be thawing one bag from my stash per day. If I have enough stash to last her til 12 months, then I'll be clear to go down to 2 pumps a day!

My question is... am I risking clogged ducts and mastitis by reducing to 2 pumps a day? I was worried going from 4 to 3, but so far it's been ok (some pain still but no clogs or mastitis... yet... knock on wood). But only 2 pumps a day seems a little extreme.

Does anyone else pump only twice a day? or maybe just once?? (and NOT nurse in between.)
