I have been EP'ng since LO has been 6 weeks (we had tongue tie issues that turned into nursing aversion to refusing to nurse which led me to have to pump and bottle feed).... so for almost 5 months... I've started out doing it every 3 hours.... and Im down to like every 5 hours and my supply hasn't suffered. My supply is predictable though for every hour I wait I produce an ounce per side.... I would try it and see what happens. If you notice a drop you can definitely do things to up your supply( power pumping, herbal supplements, lactation cookies etc.) When EPing I was told that I need to pump for a Minimum of 15 minutes. I usually go for like 20 because one side seems to be never ending.

@coacheswife123: I too have dropped cold turkey every time. When I pumped 5X a day I used to produce 35 oz. Now that I only pump 3X, I produce 28-30 oz. I have a strong/fast let down, so 90% of my milk is out in 10 min., but if I have time I try to pump longer.. At the end of the day I think I get a few extra ounces by extending my pump sessions to 20 min..

Things that I think have kept my supply up all these months.. Staying on schedule most days, pumping for an extra 5 minutes past second letdown (when I have time), staying hydrated, and drinking MMT and eating brewers yeast when AF is around.. Hope this helps!

I've dropped cold turkey every time. The only major hit was from 4 to 3. But since you pump for such a shirt time!!! If you aren't making enough, you can just go a bit longer.

We nurse once a day but I pump for all other sessions. I recently dropped down from 6 sessions a day (nursing + 5 pumps) to 5 sessions (nursing and 4 pumps) and my supply has stayed in tact. I'm curious as to whether it can handle going down to 4x a day, which I plan to start at the end of this month when LO will be 8 months old.

@coacheswife123: Yes! If you drop it without slowly stretching the time, it might affect your supply right away.

@yin: by approaching slowly do you mean slowly stretching my time between pumps ?? Thanks !

Dropping a session shouldn't be a problem at all. If you want to keep up with your supply, try to extend your pumping time by another 5 minutes to ensure that it doesn't dip. You might want to try approaching it slowly and not drop the session all of a sudden as well. Best of luck! You're doing a great job.

No advice, cause I'm not there yet. Just wanted to say way to go for EPing - and 35 oz a day seems awesome! Best of luck!

A few weeks ago I decided on a whim to EP. LO is 5 mo old and has been a very distracted nurser. I felt like my boob was always out and nursing had become somewhat of a chore . It's been a great decision and really working great!

I pump 5x a day for 10-15 min at a time and average 35 oz a day. LO drinks around 30-32 oz a day.

I pump around every 3-4 hrs on a loose schedule that looks something like this : 6 am, 9:30, 1:30, 4;30 8:30.

I'm wondering if I could successfully drop one of those mid day sessions. Maybe move to an every 5 hr schedule (6:00, 11:00, 4:00, 8:30) ?

I also have about 500 oz in the freezer. I would rather not dip into it (plan to donate) bc LO prefers fresh but in the event that my supply dips I do have a stash. Hoping if it does dip it would still be ok since I'm pumping more that he needs usually ?

Any and all advice appreciated !
