@Anagram: absolutely. especially if you keep up with the other pumps. And if you DO notice a supply dip, I'd add in a pump session if you have time during the weekends or something. But at this point, it's more about your body not producing milk during the times you normally would pump.

I've been EPing for 9.5 months. I'm working on weaning now, but I have a freezer stash to last to 12 months. I was doing 5x/day and getting 30-35oz per day. I just dropped 1 session per day each week- so I went to 4x (actually, I did this for a month or so before I decided to wean), then I did 3x/day for one week, then I'm currently doing 2/x a day this week, and next week I'll do 1x/day, then I'll stop. I haven't had any issues yet, and I'm still producing about 15-20oz/day now. No real engorgement/duct issues.

Good luck! It's so nice to get time back in your day!

@Anagram: I think DH was more freaked out than me. Honestly I didn't really notice at first until I had it in the fridge next to some formula and then he was like WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR MILK OMG!!!! Dr Google eased my worries. Congrats for making it this long! I lasted 3 months with low supply. I wanted to burn that thing with fire after about 3 days!

I had decreased to two sessions/day (getting about a total of 15 oz/day) at month 6. I then abruptly weaned 1.5 weeks ago bc I developed a kidney stone. I didn't want to have to pump and dump all of my opioid filled milk. So - I have been sore, using cabbage compresses occasionally. My DS adjusted to 100% formula just fine.

I weaned from EP-ing mostly because of the stress of it (since DH works nights) and also because my supply dropped. I just cut the time between pumping (first cut the night, but always kept the first in the AM one) and eventually got it down to once a day. FYI- my breast milk had a mint green tinge to it when I was down to one pump a day. Which FREAKED ME OUT. But apparently it's normal when you wait a long time between expressing. Eventually when I was getting less than an ounce in that session (not long- my supply dropped to like 2-4 oz a day) I just stopped and never looked back. It was awesome. Good luck!

@aegie: @Charm54: so do you think if I drop to 3 pumps a day now, I will still have some supply (enough to get me through the next 2.5 weeks?).

Can you tell I'm really eager to drop a pump?

I EP'ed for a year. Once I hit the 11 month mark, I started to pump only 3 times a day. Morning, afternoon and night before bed. At the 12 month mark, I cut out the afternoon pump. At 13 months I cut out the evening pump and honestly, by then, my morning pump (I used to get 20oz in the morning) dwindled down to about 5 oz. I had a huge freezer stash so I just gave her half fresh and half frozen for as long as I could. My body just naturally stopped producing once I drastically cut down on pumps. I also tried to pump fewer minutes ... so when I was pumping only once at work, I would pump for 20 minutes one week, then 15 minutes the next week, then 10 minutes .. then 5 minutes then dropped that pump session.

I just started dropping one pump a month until I was down to 2x a day...then I got the flu and my supply plummeted so I quit pretty much cold turkey, minus a few sessions here and there to get rid of leakage.

I stopped at 6mo though so just transitioned her to formula.

@Anagram: I haven't read a lot about the subject, but this article put me at ease when it came to the potential for causing cancer: http://chriskresser.com/harmful-or-harmless-carrageenan although there are other concerns with carrageenans.

But if you find something better, please let me know!!

Also, you could try supplementing with yogurts. I feed Xander a lot of Almond Milk Yogurt which is high in fat and protein!

@Adira: yeah, I read that one too...and I bought some hemp milk. But then I saw it has carageenan and I really try to avoid that for LO. You would think I'm a super-crunchy all-organic and glass bottles type of person from these posts, but I'm totally not--I shovel total shit into my own face several times a day. But I just hate to give LO something several times a day that has a product that has shown evidence of causing cancer.

I need to investigate all the hemp brands and see if I can find one without carageenan. I'm dubious that I have the drive to make my own every few days, plus then it wouldn't have the fortified calcium and vitamin D.

@Anagram: I buy hemp milk at a grocery store. For me, it's found in the coffee aisle with the non-dairy creamers. It's the Tempt brand and comes in a carton of 32 oz. I chose hemp because it's the closest to WCM calorie-wise. The main thing our pediatrician was concerned about was fat and hemp actually is pretty fatty! It is mostly just lacking in protein, but that's easy for me to supplement.

I would suggest that since you have no freezer stash, start making the switch to your alternative milk as you drop pump sessions. That way HOPEFULLY your LO will be totally transitioned over once you're done pumping!

@Adira: but I think I'm going to go ahead and drop to 3 pumps soon, like next week. I just don't know if that will totally kill my supply or I'll be able to make it longer.

My LO seems to really like the unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but then I realized it only has 30 calories/cup (!) which is no bueno for a baby, so now I'm back to square 1.

@Adira: I have almost no freezer stash. It was wiped out in a freezer malfunction 2 weeks ago. Do you buy hemp milk or make your own? Do you overthink/panic about the fewer calories in hemp vs WCM?

I wasn't an EPer, though it sometimes felt like I was. I pumped at work and in the evenings and weekends in order to have enough milk for Xander at daycare.

When I weaned off the pump, I basically would decrease the amount of time I pumped for a session by 5 minutes each day and then drop that session. I'd drop one session a week until I was done.

As far as switching Xander from BM to hemp milk (he's allergic to dairy), I starting mixing a little bit of hemp with BM every week. So his 6 oz bottle would get 1-2 oz of hemp and the rest was BM. I increased the amount of hemp each week by roughly 1 oz (only because I had a large enough freezer stash to do that - you could definitely transition faster depending on your stash).

Hope this helps!

Just as the title states--give me some pump weaning tips. I'm currently at 4 pumps a day. LO turns 1 year in 2 weeks and 4 days. She has never taken the MSPI formula she's allowed to have, and she can't switch to WCM so I'm a little worried about this transition.

I need a plan of action!
