I had to give an extra bolus to get it evenly applied, but after that it was very effective. I only had it for about 3 hrs though. I had some occasional aching at the injection site for many months after birth, but it's completely gone now.

@coopsmama: I think the blog post is called "My Cursed Spine"... and it was only traumatic because of my history with epidurals!! And I really, truly believe I just had bad luck or my spine is just cursed. But while my epidural (and spinal cath) were working they were GLORIOUS.

Nothing with the first one except I felt they gave me too many iv fluids along with the epidural so my bottom and legs ballooned up for a couple hours. Also I got itchy but that went away as soon as I got off the epidural

With my 2nd LO there was a spot in my lower back on one side where all the pain seemed to gather during contractions. That spot hurt on and off for several weeks after giving birth. It wasn't intense pain just a bit bothersome and it's gone now. I also asked them to turn it down when I got it, I had a cold and it was making me panicky bc I already was having trouble breathing and I just felt numb too high up. Once they turned it down I was fine though.

I didn't have any side effects after the epi was out, other than a bruise at the site and some soreness that went away after a few days.

But getting it done was really painful, and most of the time while I had it I was a total zombie. It was like being mostly asleep - I could hear people and knew what was going on, but it was really difficult to respond. But oddly, there was a problem with the connection for it and it started to wear off, and after they fixed it the zombie-ness didn't come back. I don't know if I could've walked, I had a c-section at 10:30pm and had no desire to do anything other than be with baby and sleep until the next day.

I didn't have any long-term effects. Mine was only in place for about 3 hours before it fell out. They replaced it but it never took after that. Even so, it took a long time for me to regain my leg strength - I was not steady on my feet for another 6 hours or so.

My second went too far and became a spinal cath which led to a spinal headache. I got the blood patch procedure done 3 days post partum and we stayed in the hospital an extra day. Not gonna lie.. one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I blogged about it here on the blog.

With my first I had numbness on one spot on one leg, but it could have been from pushing. It went away after about 2 weeks.

I had a spinal headache that lasted for a few weeks. I went back to the hospital 3 days after the birth to have a blood patch treatment done.......that only made it so headache medicine kept the spinal headache under control. Before then there was nothing I could do or take that gave any relief. I was able to stop 24/7 headache meds about 2 weeks later.

I agree -- the epidural was amaaaaazing. I labored for 30 hours without and the epidural was my little piece of heaven that got me through. I will probably ask for it much sooner this go around!

No side effects at 9 months pp but the epidural was the most painful part of my labor memory. I was trying to hold in my tears but it was hard, it took the dr forever to find the right spot but so thankful it worked out.

It made me have the shivers pretty bad as it wore off. Not sure if its epi related or not. I also have a numb spot in my right heal/achilles area. Once again, not sure if its related or not. The epidural was way too amazing to even worry about these small side effects!

Their first attempt went in too far, and was unsuccessful (second worked just fine), and I ended up with pretty severe spinal headaches. I had two corrective epidurals done over the span of a week, post-birth. The second one remedied the issue, but I had some localized tenderness for another week, or two (likely from getting four epidurals in five or six days).
