I thought I should update that the brand name epipen savings card is legit! At least for my situation, “up to $300 off” was accurate, it took off my whole $285 part of the cost per pack. The impax generic was quoted to me at about $85 and for that I had a $25 off I think, so brand name came out cheaper. The pharmacist told me it will only work on one pack at a time but I can refill right away if I want to get another - they do have to order it but expect it Monday. Such a relief!

We have a prescription insurance plan that has good coverage, but our problem has been that they are backordered. Initially we could only find one kind, after calling around, then after we had to use one the replacement was a different brand and that's all that was available. So before delving too deeply into coupons, definitely check with some local pharmacies about what's available. :meh:

We have blue shield ppo and pay $10 copay for a 2pk. Ditto what a PP said about it being backordered. I was freaking out last month because my DDs epipens were expiring and everywhere Was backordered for months.

Good luck with everything from a fellow food allergy mama. :goodluck: .

We don't have experience with epipens, but I would suggest talking to your doctor and maybe even asking someone at your pharmacy. Our local Walgreens has been really helpful with making sure we got the manufacturer coupon for an expensive prescription lately that insurance won't cover.

FWIW my ped said I could even try the adult Epipen on a child if it was a question of anaphylaxis before ambulance arrival.

My DH has a BUNCH of allergies so we have adult Epipens, but both kids haven't shown allergies yet thankfully.

@bhbee: Also we started with EpiPen Jr at age 1 and DD was definitely not even close to 33 lbs, so I bet that is fine but definitely worth double checking!

Ugh it makes me so mad how expensive they can be! On our old insurance we paid $300 per 2 pack of EpiPen Jrs and needed 3 sets for school, daycare and home, so $900 per year x 2 kids with food allergies! We had good luck last year getting the generic version of the EpiPen Jr. much cheaper, I think they were $100 a 2 pack, and this year I have no idea what they would have been because we already met our out of pocket max by the time we needed to refill!

I'd definitely print out any savings cards and then have your pharmacist try to run it a few different ways, some drugs can be cheaper if you just don't even go through insurance and just use the savings card.

This is really dependent upon insurance so it is hard to say. I always have the allergist process the Auvi-Qs and have never paid, high deductible with very strict pharmacy coverage as I work for the PBM.

One thing on Epi-Pens many retail pharmacies are backordered, I managed to do it through mail order and because generic was backorder I paid $40 for 2 brand name. Just keep pushing and looking, it is a headache to deal with. Good luck!

actually a secondary question is if she even qualifies for anything but Auvi-Q 0.1mg since she doesn't meet the 33lb weight for Epipen Jr;s 0.15mg dose? or maybe doctors just fudge that?

guess I am definitely calling the dr tomorrow.

@Sams Mom: $50 I could deal with! I guess I won't know until I get it filled and try the savings card, would be nice if they could just make it clear . . .

My husband's doctor almost always has vendor/rep coupons for us, so a 2 pack has run anywhere from free-$50. We haven't replaced them yet since generic has become an option, so no idea there. 😕

we need them for the baby (allergic to milk and egg and some fruit) and trying to figure out what our best option is. I know it's insurance dependent but has anyone had luck with coupons or copay cards? or bad experiences with generics?

we have a HDHP with UHC and I got quoted $285 for a 2pk (which we would need 2 of). I printed an epipen savings card that says save up to $300/2pk but no idea what "up to" really means!

I talked to Auvi-Q about their savings plan but we only qualify for 2 free pens in the baby dosage (every other dosage seems to be 4 pens) so we'd have to buy the other pack at $360.

then there are the generics from Mylan and Impax, which don't seem that much cheaper on our insurance and also have some coupons?

any ideas appreciated!
