I'm so sorry :( It's like rubbing salt in the woulds. We paid $6,500 for a baby last year that we didn't get to take home with us.

You can definitely negotiate with the hospital FYI.

I went in for a scheduled d&e a few weeks ago -- missed miscarriage at 12 weeks. They charged insurance $8,000, and I'm liable for $1,000. I find that amazing for what I was told was a routine, 15 min procedure. I get that there's anesthesia and everything, but really? Eight thousand dollars?

I am so sorry. I had a high deductible plan for the first half of my pregnancy so I totally understand the absurdity of all of this. I still have some bills that I am struggling to pay :meh:

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I haven't had ER issues (thank god) but have had them with the hospital for both of my last two losses.

I got a bill for $370 from my doctor who who performed my D&C in August. Being his patient, I went ahead and paid it.

Fast forward a little bit and I got a bill from the hospital for $370. When I went to see what it was for, it was for time spent with my doctor. What the???

I submitted a question about it and haven't heard anything back, so I'm just not paying it.

@jedeve: I am so sorry. That stinks :(

@Iced Tea: I'm a "retired" (read: used to be, in my previous life, before being a SAHM 😂) Clinical Laboratory Scientist...so I'm the one who ran all the blood tests. Just wanted to comment that your blood type obviously stays the same, but many times your provider will also order an antibody screen (which can change during pregnancy, as your body is exposed to your baby's blood antigens). And whenever an antibody screen is ordered, a blood type will also be performed (as a quality assurance measure). Just an FYI :) And I totally agree with you that the testing should be discussed with you, whether it's "routinely ordered" or not!

Sucks so much. I went to the ER for a suspected miscarriage and wound up with a $1,000 bill. The next miscarriage I flat out told the nurse I wasn't going anywhere but wanted to come into the office the next day. She got upset with me but I had her get the doctor on the phone after hours and the doctor agreed with me. I'm so sorry - it's just an added pain to something you are already going through.

We fought with our insurance earlier this year after being informed my NT ultrasound would not be covered. Between that and the anatomy scan, we owed over $1000. My daughter passed at 23 weeks....they showed no compassion whatsoever. I would have been satisfied if they dropped half the bill but even after we submitted two appeals, it was still denied.

Now we are dealing with being double charged for twins. They book me for two appointments yet I've never needed two full slots to look over everything.

Yeah, there is so much absurdity.

At my last appointment, they were explaining all the blood tests they would run (probably all of which I will pay for as part of my deductible). I questioned several tests, because they just ran them at my annual appointment in March or during the pregnancy I lost in July. Their response: we just always do these routinely. And they wouldn't skip any.

Clearly my blood type will not change from one month to another, yet they've tested for it three times already!! Total absurdity.

I'm actually thinking about changing to a midwifery practice that emphasizes discussion and choice. Everything is optional. It could save me some money.

I know, it totally sucks.... this is part of why health care is so annoying, it is difficult to know what we're being charged for or how much, and so we can't tell them "no" ! Similar thing happened to me, I had confusing hcg stats during my loss and my OB was worried it could be a ectopic and she told me to go to the ER because it was her day off... so I dutifully went, not knowing that the ER Dr wouldn't take my insurance, and they did a abdominal ultrasound even though I told them it was a waste of time and they should do a vag ultrasound.... got charged for both.

I just want to vent for a minute.

I went to the ER for a miscarriage at 5.5 weeks because my OB wouldn't see me since she hadn't previously seen me for that pregnancy. The bill was $2600. Insurance is covering half of it.

I find it absurd. They gave me an ultrasound after my hcg came back at 10. I told them I wasn't having any pain on my right side. They did $800 of lab tests like STD testing (which I could have told them I didn't need) and my RH status (which I could have told them. Or they could have looked in my records).

I'm mad at myself for going to the ER at all.
