I think we stopped around 4 or 5 months. LO was a fall baby so I liked that she had an extra layer of warmth around her during the winter. However, it was sort of annoying for me because I am very short and it came up very high (as in, it literally obstructed my view if I didn't fold it down). I was happy when we didn't need it anymore. For another month or so I used the little seat cushion that comes with the insert....but you probably could use a rolled up towel or something.
