@mrsjyw: it wasn't a deterrent for us because all the sources i read said that front-facing would be too overstimulating, so it actually wasn't a feature on my list of priorities.

I'm not a fan of forward facing. You can see my blog post on it for more details.

Honestly, we have bought 3 different carriers over the past 11 months. The Boba wrap worked wonders when I was on maternity leave and had to wear her around the house. DH used the Ergo on walks and to help calm her during the colicky days. When she hit about 5-6 months though she really wanted to look around so I bought an inexpensive front facing carrier. I won't wear it because I know it would hurt my back, but DH has worn it a few times. I think your needs will evolve over time and you may end up needing more than just one carrier.

Nope. The concerns about hip placement made me not even consider forward facing.

Ditto the other posters who were concerned with hip development and overstimulation... It just isn't an ergonomic position for baby or parent, I think.

We had an Ergo first and Gemini second... Even the Beco rep I talked to at a baby show told me that even if the Gemini has a fwd facing option, the company discourages it for anything longer than about 20 mins. I had to pull that number out of the rep. In general she just discouraged that fwd facing overall. DD did just fine facing in all the time.

I didn't look for a FF option because of overstimulation and I like to be able to see his face. LO has been worn 'tummy to tummy' since day 1 and at 10 months still really loves it.

I think a great option to FF are back carries. LO belly laughs when he is on our backs which is really fun.

We're going with a carrier that doesn't have a forward-facing option because of concerns with hip issues, so it wouldn't be a deterrent for us!

I didn't really care for FF option because of the concerns with hip dysplasia. Now that we've been using it since Week 2, I hope it won't be a problem because she is used to facing inward only.

No, by the time he was big enough to front face, he was much more comfortable on my back! Heavy babies in front hurt your back :)

LO isn't here yet but I know enough babies who sometimes got very upset facing in that I want the option. I don't see any downside of the Beco Gemini vs the Ergo, so I'm going with the Gemini just to have the forward option, just in case. I know facing in is better though, and if your LO is already here, you know their personality. Mine is still rolling around in my belly, so I don't know what they will prefer :)

Also DH wants the forward option, but since I'm the researcher in the family, I'll just tell him what's best!

Front facing is developmentally inappropriate for infants! Not only does it put hips at an unnatural angle, but it can cause over-stimulation and disorientation. It's also quite dangerous for very small babies who might fall asleep with their head flopped forward without proper support. It's possible for their airways to become constricted in such a position :(

For my son he associated the Ergo with nursing so riding in it meant boob time. He would have been frustrated if they weren't easy access, lol.

Nope. I know front facing isn't recommended for their hip growth so even though DH is convinced our baby would prefer it (he probably would, he's very nosy) we're sticking with the Ergo. He can see pretty easily over the sides anyways now that he is bigger.

She still loves our ergo at 20 months. I can't imagine that she would consider facing out. Ergo does have a side carry which is much more how she likes to be carried.

For us DS hated forward facing and loved being able to "hide" in my chest when overstimulated. When he got bigger we moved to back carries so he could face the same direction as me, but still "hide" if he needed to. Love our Ergo even now at 2!
