Moby wrap! My son was colicky, and wrapping him in the "Newborn hug hold" was often the only way to calm him down, and for me to have free hands! I was super anti-Moby because of all the fabric pre-baby, but I totally found it to be a lifesaver.

We use both the K'Tan and the Ergo with the insert for both kids. In the warmer months, the Ergo with insert was a bit too hot for both DS and I, but it was perfect for DD who was born in the fall. I liked the K'Tan for the first month or so.

I wore my #2 constantly in the Ergo from less than a week old just swaddled in an A&A blanket. He was 7lbs 4oz at birth and we never used an insert. I got a lot of use out of the Moby too, but wrapping was too awkward early on unless I had help. I could manage with the Ergo just fine solo.

I used the Ergo with insert and Baby K'tan. I used the Ergo with insert for at least 5 months and then just the little bottom pillow (or you could use a small towel rolled up) to keep her higher, but she was quite petite for a long time.
In the earlier months, I usually preferred the K'tan anyway, but used the Ergo more for travel and if I really needed the pockets.

Hey there--just reporting back. We used the insert today (without the pillow at the bottom) for E and it still worked great. But, reading through these comments, it sounds like for wearing around the house a rolled blanket would work fine! We've always used the Ergo outside and it's been great because it keeps her warm. :) Have fun babywearing!

No need for the insert! Just look for a YouTube video on how to use a receiving blanket.

I preferred the wrap when she was smaller. I didn't get the insert until she was about 5-6 weeks old and it seemed like it was too loose.

@Mrs. Lion: I use both a solly wrap and an ergo with my 5 weeker and the ergo is much easier, imo. I do a rolled up blanket (the popular muslin swaddle ones) under her bum and put her legs on each side (no infant insert needed) and it works really well. I have also successfully nursed her in it.

I think the insert was a waste. My girls were big babies and both grew out of it by four weeks. Wrapping was easier for us with newborns.

I have a Tula and wore my little one in it from 2 months till almost 6 months with the insert. If the sizing of the ergo is similar I'd say the insert is worth it.

I liked the wrap when LO was tiny, especially if I was going to be inside (or if it was hot outside) -- the ergo insert is like a little sleeping bag, and the wrap was perfect for my tiny super-snuggly baby. That said, when I had to go for walks outside in the snow, the ergo with insert was great for keeping her warm :) Now that she is bigger, she doesn't like to be as constrained in the wrap and prefers the ergo. She's on the small/short side, so I stopped using the cocoon part of the insert and just use the little pillow to boost her up (she's 3 months now). It's not difficult to use, although it is just another *thing* to have to keep track of! I think they recommend the insert for 8-12lbs...with my first, I used at least the pillow part til about 4 months. You could also use other things (rolled blanket, etc) as a bolster instead of buying the insert.

@Mrs. Confetti: good idea! I definitely do t want to pay full price for one. I think I saw one recently at a kids resale store for $7? Does the insert make it easier at all?

We also have the ergo (with insert) and Boba wrap. I've used the wrap at home a good bit while on maternity leave. My husband used the ergo with insert a ton, pretty much anytime we take her out on a walk. She MUCH prefers it to the stroller! It's nice for us not to have to adjust the ergo straps back and forth for the two of us.

Our gal is almost 11 lbs now and we'll be walking with her today for the first time in weeks (stupid weather!) and I'll report back about the insert at this size. Seems to me like she could possibly go without it now but I think you're supposed to keep them in it til they have total head control. I'll let you know how it goes!

We bought the insert and have barely used it (mostly because this baby doesn't seem to like being worn yet - too milk-smelling to just relax). I think you could get by with baby wrapped in a swaddle/blanket, and rolling a small hand towel and putting it at the bottom of the ergo. We did that for my one successful wear with him before the insert came and it was just as great. Save the money

Following! I have the same question.. I have the ergo and a boba wrap and don't have the insert yet. Debating whether to get it, particularly for my husband to use if he doesn't want to fool with learning how to wrap.

With lo 1 I didn't do a whole lot of babywearing, but with a toddler to chase I am definitely going to need to this time! I have a wrap and an ergo, but I don't have the insert for the ergo yet. I like the coziness of the wrap but it's kind of a pain to put on. Is the ergo with insert better? How long do do they need the insert? Baby girl is around 9 lbs now at 3 weeks.
