I'm duality certified to teach TESOL and Spanish K-12 in NY. I am mostly a middle school Spanish teacher, but some years I do teach ESL if the district needs me to.. I have a masters in both TESOL and FL teaching. In NY, you have to have proficiency in at least 1 language other than English.

Are you already a teacher? Looking to change careers? There is a strong demand for TESOL teachers in NYC and the surrounding suburbs. If I were you, I'd get dual certification so that you are more marketable.

I've been teaching ESL (we call it ELD since students likely have more than one primary language) for 4 years. I am actually transitioning out of teaching ELD so teaching ELA. Since I teach middle school, I obviously have a credential and recently got my masters.

I taught ESL at elementary schools in Maryland and then in Massachusetts before becoming a SAHM. I got my masters in TESOL, and even before I graduated back in 2007 I had schools knocking down my door (in Montgomery County, MD)! In 2014, I was looking for a job in the Boston area, and I found one pretty easily.

I really enjoyed teaching ESL in Montgomery County because the system there is just amazing. Such a huge county with so many great resources, and the policies and curriculum all reflected a great respect for the ESL teacher as a professional. In MA, it wasn't as great because the districts are so small, and everyone is reinventing the wheel. I had no curriculum to work with, and the policies were so rigid that I felt I had no decision-making power when it came to my students' amount of instruction, for one.

But aside from the school systems themselves, I loved working with ESL students, especially newcomers, and it was incredibly rewarding.

Someone else mentioned being bilingual, so I thought I'd address that too - I'm proficient in Korean, but that was pretty useless in the areas I was working in. Speaking a second language wasn't required, but I imagine that it could be, depending on the population.

Do you mind if I ask if you are fluent in another language? I'm a former k-8 teacher (current sahm) and I'd love to teach ESL when I go back. It looks like most jobs I see posted require Spanish fluency though.

I've been teaching for 11 years, and the last 8 I've been teaching ESL at a private school. When I started teaching, I was working for the public school system and I was required to take 300 hours of training for my certificate (I took classes on Saturdays) I already had a BA in English. Later, I went back to school for a Masters in ESL.

I got lucky with my job. Most colleges here only have adjunct positions and the pay is pretty low. I love what I do. I've had classes where 12 languages are spoken, and I've learned so much about other cultures

I started a topic earlier about instructing at a CC but wanted to ask a more specific question about teaching ESOL / ESL

Are there any ESL / esol teachers here? If so, what kind of background / education / certification do you have? Where do you teach? Was it hard to get into? Do you enjoy what you do? The more specific the better. :) thank!
