I just realized my post is kind of negative sounding towards EOs. I do think they're great and excellent tool to have around but they do need to be used properly.

I did lots of research before I got into EOs and signed up with a company to be rep... but then I ended leaving because the amount of false and bad information out there is horrible. I still love learning about them and their uses and share with friends as needed.

Like @Mrs D: says you should do your own research about EOs and what to use around your children. I do diffuse and eucalyptus blend around my 2 year old and have since he was one. But he's a large child with no health issues and it's blend (so not pure Eucalyptus), and I only use one or two drops when he's in the room I'm diffusing. I only use EOs topically on him when its well diluted and in a lotion or something I've made or purchased. (and only certain oils) This is what my comfort level is fine with and what my research leads to me be okay with.

Oh...and @RKitty: brings up a good point about nursing. I avoided mints when I was nursing (for ME)...but I took fennel internally bc they say it can support nursing. :) Forgot about that recommendation...not sure how I could forget about the intensity of a straight drop of fennel in water! hahaha

@agold: I would definitely recommend doing your own research and deciding what you are comfortable with. Or find someone who's opinion and research you trust. Lots of websites make blanket statements about safety...like the one linked above which says no EOs should ever be used on babies under 6 mos of age...which just seems silly - think of all the baptisms that go on - in my experience they always include the use of some EOs. Or how many parents use a drop of Frank on the head of a newborn.

Like all things in motherhood...everyone is going to have an opinion and there are loads of websites/pages that offer guidelines in all directions (use no oils to use all the oils)...figure out what your comfort level is with proper research and take everything else with a grain of salt.

Peppermint is the most controversial oil I use. The risk is it may slow breathing. We used it a few times when DD2s fever from having HFM at 4 mos was bad. I used it heavily diluted (1 drop in 20ml), rolled it on her spine, and had her in a onsie (no risk of the oil being anywhere but her spine). For us it helped break/control her fever.

FWIW - we also did not diffuse in small spaces until our girls were 12 mos old. At that, it was only Lavender.

@snowjewelz: what she says!

EO are great but you do need to be careful using them around infants and young children. I know Eucalyptus and Rosemary contain chemical compounds that can negatively effect children and their brain development.

Mints you need to be careful because they can effect breast milk production. I couldn't use any of them because they heavily effected my production.

Also you want to watch out for 'hot' oils. These oils can burn on adults much less children. Mints are hot oils as is cinnamon and clove. These oils always need to be heavily dilute and if to much is applied don't use water to wash off but another neutral oil.

Just make sure whatever oils you use are safe for infants! I just know a lot aren't!

We use lots of EOs in our house.

*Lavender and doTerra's Serenity for calm and peacefulness. Lavender in the diffuser...Serenity on my chest when I nursed.
*Lemon & Arborvitae in a roller for congestion - rolled on feet and chest.
*Immunity Blend: lemon, frank, oregano, melaleuca - highly diluted, rolled on the spine
*Clove Oil for teething (highly diluted - applied directly to gums)
*Peppermint for fever (highly diluted) rolled down spine

For me...I used: OnGuard (immunity blend) and Serenity regularly for staying healthy and staying calm. I also diffused a LOT on maternity leave. Lots of Lavendar, Citrus Bliss, Lemon, Balance, Peace, Bergamot...basically just depended on my mood! :)

@agold: I love this one for PP. It has vanilla and lavender in it. It's amazing. I like it diffused or in a roller ball with coconut oil.
