Maybe Vaseline. I've heard it is good to cover their tush in it until the meconium is gone because it helps it just wipe right off (apparently it is like tar and hard to get off). The nurse at our birthing class recommended A&D ointment for their dry feet and hands (and it is good for other things too).

@jedeve- she did fit into NB onesies & the footless sleepers, but not footed sleepers. Luckily, I had a drawer of NB clothes and a drawer of 0-3 months.
I third nursing tanks - I have every one from target. I got 2 to begin with and then went back bought the rest of them. I go back and check every time I'm there to see if they have more, haha! I live in them.

@Mrs. Tricycle: agree.

Nursing camis was one of the first things I wish I had more of. I didn't realize how fast everything can get soaked in milk. Sleeping nursing bras are nice too.

You can never have too many wipes. Newborn sleepers are easy to put on especially the zippered kind. 10 is a good amount. Also baby nail file or scissors are handy.

I would get some size 1 diapers to have on hand. We had NB diapers that we tried to put her in and she hated them, so we went straight to size 1. She was 9 lbs 3 oz, so pretty close to the weight limit for NB.
Also, I wish I had some nursing gel pads ready in the freezer. Breastfeeding is rough in the beginning!

I liked the baby gowns, they were nice for middle of the night changes! I agree with the underwear you don't care about. Some easy snacks for the middle of the night. Oh my gosh I was STARVING every time I woke up to nurse in the first week or two. Also, a good water bottle to keep near you while nursing too, I was never so thirsty in my life either...weird but no one ever told me that would happen. Unless I'm just a weirdo.

Nursing bras and nursing tanks. I have two tanks that I sleep in - and they're constantly getting soaked with milk even with nursing pads. I need at least twice as many. I have two nursing bras and two sleeping nursing bras - they're always dirty and I wish I had more.

Honestly..... no matter how prepared I tried to be/thought I was, there was always something missing. DH went out pretty much every day to get something else! I needed a breast shield, I wanted to try a different type of nipple cream, a different kind of paci for LO, a different kind of bottle (we weren't even going to use paci's or bottles, but I did have some on hand just in case. Just not the right kind apparently). Nothing goes as planned though.

Something for you to wear, either loose shirts with buttons or tops in stretchy materials to pull down for nursing, or some tops designed for nursing. Make sure it's comfy!

I'm six weeks away, time to start gettin ready for this little one! We really don't want to buy too much ahead of time but are going to make a target run for some essentials this weekend. What did you use the first week with baby?

Here's my list:
Newborn diapers
Diaper cream
Soap/lotion
Nursing cream/pads
Pads for mama
Newborn onesies
Thermometer
Grooming kit

I have a few burp cloths, hats, swaddling blankets, and sleepers. What else do you absolutely need? (Besides big gear like bouncers and crib)
