Health insurance troubles really suck. We are in an even more difficult situation because we are BOTH self-employed. And in our area, our options (all two of them!!) really sucked this year.

The only tiny upside is that our new plan is qualifies us to open an HSA. See if your plan qualifies. There are specific criteria for deductibles and OOP max. Using HSA dollars to cover your expenses will allow you to avoid paying your usual income tax on those dollars.

We are about to shell out thousands toward our deductible when I have another baby this year. And then the coinsurance is still 50% after the deductible is met; it is such a joke. And not a cheap premium in exchange, either. It's over 10k for the year in premiums alone.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: He did. We actually just ran the numbers, and it turns out his higher premium vs. my higher deductible works out to be in the favor of my current insurance. We will just wait to switch until the baby is born, and we fully qualify under special enrollment.

I hate insurance ... running the numbers makes it even worse. ;)

I'm a little surprised HR suggested the first option, but hey open enrollment and extended open enrollment is your chsnce to switch! Did your husband already make his selections?

Eta: two coworkers once had a lively discussion about our plan vs our new high deductible plan. The one with a chronic disease said the new plan sucked. The other one who rarely went to the doctor (he didnt have kids at the time) loved the cost savings of the new. These plans are definitely not one size fits all.

@littlejoy: Yay, I hope that's the case! That would take all of the guesswork out of it.

I think deductibles only transfer if you are switching within the same company - like, my employer is UHC, my husband's is UHC, so there'd be a good possibility there.

However, it would change from a single-person plan, toa a family plan - which has different premiums, deductibles, and OOP maxes.

Lastly, when you have a baby, you can definitely switch everyone over after that because having a child is a qualifying life event. However, that won't be retroactive on your prenatal care, etc.

I just saw that open enrollment is actually extended til 1/31??? I think this means I can change insurance, and cancel my current coverage. Looking further into this.

@Greentea: @LemonJack: I agree ... I just don't know what constitutes loss of coverage when you are self-employed. The birth of a child is considered for special enrollment, and I believe you can enroll early (premptively). Since it's financially motivated (the birth would be thousands more via my insurance), I'm not sure I have the means to continue paying for my own coverage ... does that make sense? But I do agree that I don't want to rock the boat with something that feels like a gray area (it shouldn't be gray - I just can't find any resources).

I would be too nervous to do that. I think because you're pregnant they will probably scrutinize further. If they find out you weren't telling the truth you would be on the hook for all of the costs, and I would be worried DH might lose his coverage as well.

I definitely would not do anything but follow every rule and be completely upfront and honest. One of the last things you want to deal with is legal trouble!

I didn't realize how much my insurance sucks (high premium, high deductible, u/s aren't covered, etc.) until after I was pregnant. I have an individual policy (LO is on it with me) since I am self-employed.

DH has GREAT insurance through work, which always seemed too expensive (high premium, but super low deductible), and now it seems like a way better option. With the birth, and adding another baby to the mix, his insurance is a better way to go.

Since open enrollment is over, I would have to meet criteria for the special enrollment period. DH's HR person said that she would say I simply lost my coverage ... is this okay? I'm not sure how closely this is monitored.

And, do you know if deductibles transfer if you change insurance due to special enrolment?
