@mynoahbear: yay for our little Es! I think I want to avoid another "ko" ending if we go with another ethnic first name. But the names that end in "ko" seem to have the more western sounding nicknames! :-)

@autumnlove: Your LO has the same first name as my E. I think the name is ethnic but not so ethnic that it would be fine if you gave her sister an American name. I think if we were to have another baby girl, we would lean more towards an American name or another very western sounding ethnic name. If we were to have a boy, we would definitely go with an American first name.

I know first borns with ethnic names because they were born in their home country and immigrated with their parents at a young age. And then their siblings got American names. I think the first borns have wished that they had American names, too, only because people always got confused. One of my friends did legally change her name from a Korean to American one. I think she did it right before entering college so that she could be known as her new name from the get go.

I like for names to be similar, we've picked traditional names for our boy and our girl. Boy will be Robert, girl will be Elizabeth. I think it'd just be weird if we named a third Winter or something like that. Winter is such a trendy name! But Catherine or James for a third would flow well together.

I kind of like names to match. Like, not all the same first letter, but like if you say them together (which you will do one million times a day) they should flow. That would be my only rule.

By the way, what would be considered an "ethnic" name?

@autumnlove: Didn't realize your LO already has an ethnic first name! I don't think they'll consider it unfair (I've seen families that have done it), but doing an ethnic middle name is one way to balance it out. I have an ethnic middle name b/c it's my mom's maiden name; the only thing I've disliked is that there are conflicting pronunciations of it in English.

I personally would not do that... I would think people might wonder if we adopted one of them! But I also wouldn't give any child of mine an "ethnic" first name because I'm not a huge fan of them.

@autumnlove: I don't know if you can predict how your kids will feel about it. It could work out that they both prefer the types of names they have or both wish they had the inverse.

My LO's first name is ethnic and her middle name is American. Wondering if she will resent me if her little sister gets an American first name and ethnic middle name?

@travelgirl1: Congrats! Your baby is adorable!

I'm not sure, I was thinking this the other day... we've given our daughter exotic-sounding first and middle names, and our last name is Spanish. Kind of puts the pressure on for us to think of something interesting for the next one too...

Maybe not unfair, but depending on what ethnicity the name is it's possible someone might wonder if one of the kids wasn't born here.

I agree- it depends on the names, so possibly. But it would be weird in a "huh, wouldn't have thought they were siblings" way, not, "what were their parents thinking?!" way.

Um kind of but it would depend on how different the names were.

My LO has a unique name but if we have another girl we will probably just go with something traditional.
