Good thread! I also would like to do this in the future- but I have no idea what I'd sell either. I'm not really worried about it yet, I'm thinking of doing it when LO goes to school so I have a while.

I have been thinking of starting one too! I am so crafty and my mom always comments on how I need to make this stuff for etsy.

Things I would list:
Rosette clips and headbands
Stuffed owl (I made a really adorable one for my LO before he was born!)
Other stuffed animals
Minky blankets
Minky Taggies
burp cloths

But I haven't gotten to it, maybe when my baby is a little older and I have time for more of that stuff. I've taken a break since he was born.

I have one and make enough money to pay for hobby expenses. It's a lot of work, especially since I work full time and have baby S by myself a lot of the time because of Mr. S's job. I do it because it's fun, not because it makes a lot of money. If I didn't have a full-time job, I'd put much more effort into marketing, but for now I have as many orders as I can handle :)

I think the key to being successful is to have a high-quality product, excellent customer service, beautiful packaging and to do smart marketing to your target audience.

I have 2 (in addition to working full time), and they each make enough money to pay for my hobbies, and give me some extra spending money - nothing to live off of, or enough to pay my bills. Honestly, I wouldn't expect more financial return from an Etsy shop unless you have a really unique product that somehow "makes it big" AND you devote a ton of time to marketing, promoting your shop, etc. (i.e., it's your full time job like @ErinPye).

Etsy is pretty good about having tutorials on how to increase sales, and if you put the time in, you're more likely to see better returns. If you just list a couple of items and don't do anything else, you probably won't do well. Good pictures are essential, as is having something that sets you apart from the hundreds of other people who are making essentially the same, or similar items to you.

Like I said, my Etsy shops pay for my hobbies and give me extra spending money (and enough money over the course of last year to go on vacation) - but it's not money you can ever count on in a specific month, and it takes a fair amount of work to generate sales. I guess I personally would never expect an Etsy shop to provide "real" income, although I know that happens for a few, select people with a few select products. It's fun if you have the time to devote to it, and is rewarding. I think it only makes sense to open a shop if you really love whatever item(s) you are making, and not if you are just making items to make money.

I have one and it's my full time job (along with my own website). It took a good 8 mos. to a year to start turning a profit. It's fun to work for yourself- best of luck to you!
