@Mrs D: I've never heard of either of those places and google says they are tiny! It looks like they both have train stations though, so you should be ok. Depending on where you are coming in from, another option would be to fly into Munich because it's really close to Salzburg (assuming you don't actually need to go to Vienna).

@lamariniere: thank you...I think I recalled you were in Austria so happy to hear you chime in! My gut said I'd love Austria just as much as I'd love bed my visits to many of its neighboring countries - but just wanted to check!

Vienna will be my logistics center as that appears to be where my best flight options are...my two sites are in Grosspetersdorf and Mattighofen (which I understand is just outside Salzburg)! So I'm glad to hear the airport in Vienna is great and that my train travel between the two big cities should also be easy!

@Mrs D: I live in Vienna. It is exceedingly safe for the solo woman traveler. I don't speak German but just about everyone speaks some, if not very decent English. Taking a train from Vienna to Salzburg will not be a problem. The Vienna airport is also extremely modern and easy to navigate since it's not huge. Connections into the city are fast and reliable. Let me know if you have any specific questions or need recommendations.

I traveled to Vienna with a female friend and we also split up during part of the day some days... I wouldn't hesitate to go alone.

@Mrs D: I visited Vienna a few years ago and had no trouble getting around without any German. You should be fine! Definitely research train/transportation stuff but I was totally impressed by it and we considered moving there for DH's job actually. Have a great time!

I think @Lamariniere lives in Austria, I'm sure she could offer lots of insight. I will say, yes I would do it! I've been to Austria and found it to be safe, easy to get around, etc.

I lived in Austria (Vienna) for six months in my twenties ans its a very safe country. I used to walk around alone at night (now I think OMG - You crazy kid!) and I never once felt unsafe. In most of the cities the majority of people you come across will speak english as well. I still have friends who live there any they never have compaints about crime or safety.

Thanks ladies! I appreciate the input. My gut felt Austria would be a comfortable place to be solo but it always helps to trust.

@looch: I agree...my work trips always feel so compressed as is so I always have everything planned out well in advance. Except for perhaps if I go a day early to wander and of course dinners if I am not eating with my local teams.

I travelled a bit in Austria without knowing too much about it and it's rather easy. There's always someone that speaks English to a degree that you can manage a conversation if you have a question.

When I travel for business, I like to have the major stuff booked, though, I don't trust myself to wait to organize cars and train tickets.

Looking for input from our European Bees or those who have traveled to Austria.

I have to go there for a work trip, two locations (one outside Salzburg and one outside Vienna). My boss has presented me with the question of "are you comfortable traveling there alone"...I almost answered "Sure" too quick so I held back and responded with "let me think about it and let you know"...

I travel a bit for work - not as much lately but in the past. I have traveled to Europe solo before but always to a place I had previously been with someone (Amsterdam, Germany and Paris). It occurred to me - I have never been to Austria. The trip will require some intra country travel (likely a train between Salzburg and Vienna).

Our sites are good about arranging car services for our daily transport. Sometimes dinner is arranged - or I just eat in the hotel.

What would you do? If I indicate I am not comfortable he will have my European team member travel with me...not the end of the world at all...just feeling at a loss since this is a country I have yet to visit.
