@wheres_c: Oh I plan on bringing some of that as well as Immodium!

Any idea where in Costa Rica you are going to go? We got a really good deal booking through Luxury Link and they had several CR packages, in case you haven't planned it yet!

We're probably going later this year. Don't plan on having any vax, but I usually take pepto bismol tablets when I travel if the country permits, and this nips travelers tummy in the bud.

I've been and followed recs to get hep A and typhoid, but if you're sticking to touristy areas with filtered/treated water, you should be fine. CR is VERY touristy now so most places do treat their water. And yes, bring some Cipro.

@SweetMamaM: @MediaNaranja: @Anagram: Thanks ladies! I will call my doctor tomorrow to see about getting some Cipro or something.

We will be buying our own food there and cooking our own meals, so we will just plan to buy lots and lots of bottled water to use for everything (mainly because I'm paranoid about that stuff.)

@IRunForFun: Costa Rica has totally clean water in all the touristy areas (in fact, in most of the country although there are still poor areas where the water supply isn't great). You can drink it from the tap.

If your hotel is nice it will filter all the water it uses for ice, cooking, etc. I traveled all over CR and never had an issue although I understand wanting to be cautious when pregnant-- so if you want to be overly cautious you can stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.

CR is not your typical Central American country-- their educational system routinely out scores the US, the govt infrastructure is good and they have clean water.

No extra vaccines are necessary unless you plan to hike through wild jungle with no mosquito repellant drinking out of ponds and streams. ;-)

Hope that helps!

I've never been to Costa Rica, but traveled and lived in other places in Central America. I think you'll be fine. I always boiled my water or drank bottled, but brushed my teeth with tap and was fine.

I will say, though, that it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a prescription for cipro to take with you, just because if you do get any sort of diarrhea you'll want it, and getting to a pharmacy or doctor would be a pain in the ass. Hopefully you won't need it, but if you do you'll be glad to have it, you know?

Typhoid and Hep A are largely transmitted through water consumption so as long as you are preparing your own food and rinsing with purified water, you should be fine. I'd definitely recommend taking a broad-spectrum antibiotic (such as doxycycline) if you can get your hands on it, or alternatively some over-the-counter version of loperamide (Imodium) and oral rehydration solution (gastrolyte) just in case.

No special precautions. You are staying in a tourist area- I think you'd look at the special meds if you were staying in the rain forest in tents or something! We stayed in tourist areas throughout the country and didn't take anything special.

DH and I aren't seasoned travelers, but we're headed to Costa Rica (Guanacaste area) a week from today. I made reservations through Luxury Link for a resort of private villas that had really good reviews on Trip Advisor and other sites. Other than that, I didn't really think much about doing anything to prepare for traveling there. I figured people go there all the time, no big deal, there shouldn't be much to do to get ready. Right?

Over the weekend we visited with the ILs and they were asking us if we had to get any vaccines or bring any special medications with us, and what we planned to avoid eating/drinking.

We're staying in a villa with a fully-equipped kitchen and we will buying our own food, so I figured standard traveling rules apply - don't drink the tap water or ice made with tap water, only eat cooked veggies, and only eat fruit with thick skin that can be washed and peeled. No problem.

I got curious about the whole vaccine/medication thing and turned to Google and now I'm worried there were things I was supposed to do that I didn't. I'm seeing recommendations for getting vaccinated against typhoid and hepatitis A and for bringing along a "travelers diarrhea" antibiotic.

I'd never heard of having to do any of this stuff for traveling to Costa Rica...did I totally miss the boat and jeopardize our trip? Or is that stuff just overkill? If you've been to CR did you have to do any medical preventive stuff? Help!
