@raintreebee: part of my family was from Dingle. My mom and sister got to go. I so wish I had been able to visit the Dingle Peninsula. You're so lucky!

My friends and I visited in 2009 and we really enjoyed the Wild Wicklow tour departing from Dublin.
http://www.wildwicklow.ie/

I also recommend visiting the Malahide Castle, we didn't do the tour, but if I were to go back, I'd opt for a tour since it was quite a ways to get there through public transportation (we stayed in Dublin).

I second @Chillybear:

Adare is gorgeous! We went there on a tour when I was 16 and didn't remember the name of the place. It was really gorgeous. Some of my favorite photos were taken there

I have family from the south, so I'm partial to that area of the country.

I wouldn't insist on flying into Dublin. Sometimes Shannon can be a little cheaper, and then it's easier to get to some things like the Cliffs of Moher.

I love West Cork. Baltimore is probably our most favorite place to visit. It's super small town, but really gorgeous. Mizen Head is also awesome. Cobh is also in that area, which is sort of the opposite of Ellis Island. It's where a lot of emigrants left from.

Our neighbors just went and they had a fantastic trip! Theirs was a guided tour so they were all over the place, but they said the food was good, the places they stayed were nice, and the locals were soooo friendly! They would ask people which pub they recommended, and the strangers would sometimes join their group for a drink! Haha.

Yes, it's beautiful! We flew into Dublin, did a tour, and flew out of Shannon. My mom and sister went back and took the train across the country. Killarney was an awesome city. The Cliffs of Moher were breathtaking. The Ring of Kerry was beautiful and fun.

If you want to splurge a bit I highly recommend a vagabond tour! They are very small, get you off the beaten path, and you definitely get a good feel for the country. Or guide was amazing. And it's worth noting that I usually prefer independent travel, but they were fantastic.

Cliffs of Moher are definitely worth going to. Absolutely beautiful. We drove around from place to place and our favorite place was Dingle. Made life long friends. Such a fun & beautiful place. We didn't love Dublin except for Trinity College and Guinness brewery, but the country side was beautiful. We stayed at little B&Bs along the way and loved them all.

yay! ireland is wonderful. I lived there for a while and loved it. It is small so you could stay in two places but just check what the travel options are for getting between them because the trains can be sexpesnive and the buses take a ridiculous amount of time and visit every little town on the way.

I'd definitely do Dublin, can't miss it. @raspberries: gave great suggestions. I'll have a think and if I can remember anything must-see, I'll come back and add it! Cliffs of Moher were my favourite though.

@Mamaof2: We went for 4 days and it was a blast! Definitely stay in Dublin for at least 2 days. Great shopping, great pubs and the Guinness Brewery. We rented a car and drove to Kilkenny and saw the castle. It's a beautiful town to explore. We then worked our way back up to Dublin along the coast, and Wicklow was nice to stop in and see the ocean.

Eat lots of lamb Irish stew, hang out in the pubs and enjoy the scenery. Have fun!

We went on our honeymoon to Ireland!

You'd probably want to spend a little bit of time in Dublin since you're probably flying in/out of there - you can see the Guinness brewery, lots of neat museums and things if you're into history, Trinity College and the Book of Kells, etc. If you want to see the west coast of Ireland, you might want to stay in Cork/Galway/Limerick and use it as a base - there's a lot more wilderness sightseeing (the Ring of Kerry, places to go hiking, castle ruins, etc.) in that direction!

I have been, but it was way back in my senior year of high school (1999- yikes!). I loved, loved, loved it and had a wonderful time. You are right in thinking that it's small enough to stay in two different places - probably more, honestly, if you don't mind moving around with your stuff frequently.

Loved the natural beauty of places like the Cliffs of Moher and Giant's Causeway, but also enjoyed just getting a feel for the culture in pubs and such.

ETA - I think it's so sweet that you and your BFF have this tradition of taking trips to celebrate milestone birthdays. How awesome to have such a great friend!

So, me and my BFF turn 40 in 2015 so we want to travel (summer 2015) ! We went to Paris in 2004 and we picked Ireland this time.

I looked on airbnb and there are over 1000 listings - I don't think Ireland is very big though so maybe we can stay in 2 different areas?

It would be ~8-10 days.

Ever been? suggestions on where to stay? Must see things?
