@Cole: I was going to suggest Mechanical Turk but I literally got depressed by how much money I earned. :bummed:

@Matcha Latte: I would love to hear more about that if you don't mind sharing how you got started with it! That would be an awesome option for me!

I don't have any experience with any of these but I have heard good things about elance.com so that might be another option to look into. Mechanical Turk is an amazon company that lets people log in and do small odd jobs and it has a very low barrier to entry so maybe it would be worth trying as you figure out an option that might be a bit less tedious. (I believe as you build "credibility" you qualify for better jobs but in the beginning I found it to mostly be boring stuff and it took forever to read the directions.)

@78h2o: Gosh that would be so helpful! It would be much more efficient to do voice to text and then just pay someone to double check for accuracy! Now that you mention it, I wonder if I could find a way to do exactly that ;) haha

@Mrs. Lion: Awesome, thank you! I think I'd probably be the opposite - faster at transcription and slower at writing! :) I used to have to dictate all of my notes when I worked in a hospital... it would be interesting to work on the other side of things. I'm surprised that the process isn't fully automated at this point, with voice-to-text programs is getting so much better, but I guess that's good for people looking for these types of jobs!

@78h2o: Rev and CrowdSource have both been good to work with. I like that the work is practically unlimited and the pay is weekly. I personally haven't been doing any work for Rev lately because it turns out I am really not good at auditory processing...if there is any background noise at all I have a really hard time determining what is being said, so transcription takes me a really long time and I end up only earning like $5 per hour, which isn't worth it to me. I would probably get better if I practiced, but CrowdSource is better for me because I am a pretty fast writer and pretty good with Google, so I can do several projects an hour and earn more like $15-20 per hour if I am focused. With both you have to go through a qualifying process, so it did take some up front time (maybe an hour for Rev and 3 hours for CrowdSource) that I wasn't paid for, but it wasn't too bad.

@Mrs. Lion: Hmm, that sounds kind of appealing for a side job. Would you recommend that company?

@Mrs. Lion: I actually meant to include transcription in my question. I've heard of several transcription opportunities over the years, as well as medical billing. Thanks for all your info!

@mrs.shinerbock: that is interesting... Uhaul is everywhere, so that is a thought!

@Matcha Latte: I'm not fluent in another language, unfortunately, but that is an interesting opportunity.

@78h2o: no training other than going through their requirements on your own. they pay per project, so the faster you are the higher the pay rate. no set hours or required workload. you can work as much of as little as you want.

@Mrs. Lion: do they pay by the hour? Or by how many you get done? Do you commit to a certain number of hours per week? Do you have to have training?

Are you fluent in any other languages where you could do freelance translation? I also work for a virtual school where I'm a teacher assistant helping the students learn a second language. Maybe there is a job similar to it that you could find?

There is a mom in my neighborhood that WAH for U-Haul as customer service. She said all she needs is a phone line and an internet connection and she works a really early shift before her LO wakes up for the day. I'm not sure how she got started doing that though.

Not medical billing, but I signed up with Rev.com to do some transcription work. You go through a qualification process and then can start. It was pretty easy to get set up. The pay isn't that great unless you are really good at it and can work fast, but it is something, and they pay weekly through paypal. I just started going through another site, Crowdsource, which has opportunities for you to write answers to high traffic questions for websites and some other short jobs. If you can google and write a paragraph then its easy work :) Again, the pay isn't great but it is something!

I was intending to be a SAHM, but we are finding that we'll need some more income for the next year or 2 until DH can advance. We won't be using daycare, so I'm looking for part time work I can do from home at my convenience when LO is sleeping/playing. I've done project management-type work the last few years, but my most recent field is somewhat limited for these opportunities & they prefer on site/full time workers, typically. Over the years I've always seen ads for medical billing home jobs... Has anyone ever done this & if so for which company?
