@Anagram: I choked on a grape just a few years ago, and I'll say it was the closest I'd ever been to dying...or so I thought! Now, it makes me sooooooo afraid to give LO grapes at all!!

Glad he is ok! So far he's only had one or two mild incidents. DH still gets nervous every once in a while but we both know gagging is good because he's figuring out how to move food in his mouth.

No serious choking incidents but she does gag a bit as she likes to shove handfuls of food in her mouth at a time. I read somewhere that gagging for up to ten seconds is ok, after that, you want to take some steps to help, and for some reason, that reassured me. I don't think I would ever let it go on for ten seconds before acting, but it has made me more relaxed. Now when she starts gagging, instead of tensing up and patting her back, I just calmly tell her to get it up and sure enough, she does.

Choking is one of my biggest fears though and the main reason we waited until LO was 10 months before starting finger foods.

So scary!!

B accidentally ate a pistachio when he was 2 and full on choked - it was terrifying. My mom, who is an ER nurse, couldn't get it out. After what seemed like a life time, he threw up.

Couple of gagging moments that each ended up with him throwing up. He thinks it's fun to shove 10 pieces of food into his mouth at the same time since I cut everything so small.

I'm terrified of choking. I just gave her finger foods for the first time ever tonight (sweet potato puffs and avocado slices). I was a wreck the whole time. If she has a choke incident I will likely feed her purées until her 2 year molars come in!!!!

So glad he's ok!!! I admit to being over protective about food...This is partially bc LO has zero teeth. So her menu is not very elaborate, therefore we've had no choking incidents. She is totally ready to feed herself, and gets mad at me when I don't let her, but I look at her big gummy smile and I dont want to risk it!

Ugh, yes! I have fished avocado out of her and a giant piece of sweet potato fry she shoved in her mouth and didn't really chew. The avocado was at 6.5 months and made me hold off on finger foods for a while, and the sweet potato was just this evening. It is so scary! I am glad B is ok!!

@swurlygurl: Exactly! I tried to explain that if she's coughing it's a good thing, it means she can deal with it on her own. People freaking out around her means she's more likely to choke because she'll panic if they do. Grrr.

@Anagram: That happened to my sister too! I think she was 7 or 8. My mom had to reach in her mouth and pull the stringy cheese out... ugh. It still gives me chills to think about

@travelgirl1: Seriously... I can *see* the SOFT peach mush on the back of her tongue... give her a second to figure it out!

Heh. I know you were asking about LOs, but I had a serious choking accident with the stringy cheese on pizza when I was about 12 (half the cheese was down my throat, the other half in my mouth, and I couldn't get it out either way). My dad had to give me the heimlich in a crowded restaurant. I really thought I was going to die.

I was traumatized enough to not eat pizza or mozzarella cheese sticks for many, many years. Till college, I think.

@swurlygurl: When we visited family England earlier this month they could not deal with BLW, every time she gagged someone stood up to whack her on the back, it drove me crazy and made me quite nervous, actually. Luckily DH is very supportive.

When DD was about 9-10 months old, she choked on a two pieces of nectarine and I probably aged 20 years in the 30 seconds that it happened. I had to put her upside down and whack her so hard and one piece flew out. There was another piece right at the back of her throat that every time she cried/breathed it went back further so I stuck my finger in her mouth and fished it out but my nail cut open the roof of her mouth. Just typing all that gives me the chills...That was the worst day of my life.

My LO just choked on a piece of pirates booty. I think he actually shoved several pieces in his mouth at once.
It was scary but I wasnt *too* worried because they dissolve fairly quickly.
I put him over my knee, hit him on the back and scooped out the offender with my fingers, after which B vomited all over my hands.

What were your scariest choking incidents and how did you handle them?
