@keepcalmcarrie: oh wow, yeah moving with a toddler and being preg sounds tough. We intentially putting off ttc until this move gets sorted out. Awesome tip on having the moving company pack LO's stuff last and unload it first!

@winniebee: ugh trying not to think about the unpacking! I bet it takes forever...will check out United Van lines, thanks!

@Ree723: omg! You have been through so much! thanks for the tips. I cannot believe how much moving companies charge! I think I might have to try to pack as much as possible and hire our the rest.

@rattles: Ok thanks. I am worried about packing up fragile framed items.

@smocks: thanks, I think we will hire out as much as possible but I don't know how much the company is going to offer DH yet. Seems like the simplist thing for me to do is try to do a bunch of packing (and getting rid of stuff).

@Baby Boy Mom: thanks for the Upack tip. I will look into that company! I don't think we'll be driving, since the move wil be from west coast all the way to the east coast...but we may sell on car so we only have to may for one to be shippped.

We did it twice in a year. First time he was 14 months second time was 26/27 months. He went to school a few days a week so I could pack. It was hairy not going to lie. I think worse than packing is unpacking.

We used United Van lines for the moves each time and have been happy with them.

I'm in the middle of this right now (the movers are loading the truck as I lay on a couch beneath a blanket, because all the doors are open and it's freezing cold!)

I have a 19 month old and am 28 weeks pregnant. This was a company move in that they provided a nice signing bonus to offset the cost, but we had to arrange everything ourselves. My DH has been working out of state for a month now, so with that plus pregnancy there was no way I could pack myself. We hired movers - it's come in slightly over $5100 for an estimated total 9000 lb of weight in our 3 bedroom house.

My best advice would be to outsource as much as possible and realize that sleep could be extremely crazy for a few days. J has actually done fine with his nap yesterday and overnight, but today's nap was brief, in the car, while my mom drove him around and I stayed with the movers.

If you get a moving company, ask them to pack LO's stuff last and unload it first so the disruption is as minimal as possible.

We did it with an almost 3 year and a 1 year old. It was harder than I thought it would be. That said, we had to do it on a shoestring budget, so I pretty much packed everything myself (after the kids went to bed because otherwise they would undo it as I was working). If you need to do it like that, look into Upack. They have pods that you pack yourself but they drive for you. Then we road tripped with the kids because it was significantly cheaper than flying plus shipping the car. An adventure for sure.

I have, twice (ugh). Once when DD was 5 months old (3 states away), one when she was 18 months (across town). If you can swing it, I would hire out as much as possible. We absolutely are the next time we have to move (hopefully not for 4 more years). Have them pack for you if you can. If you can't, get a babysitter, especially on the actual move day(s). I do not envy you, it was so stressful. Honestly, the cross town move was more stressful bc I hadn't completely packed everything from the old place, and it was all done in one day. The longest day ever. At least if it's far away it is broken into more than 1 day. Good luck!

@Seattlemom: We had the movers pack it the day they loaded everything. (We added it to our estimate a week and a half out.) It added about $300 to the cost of the move to have them do it, but it was well worth it to me to take it off my plate in the home stretch.

@luckypenny: Oh boy, I better start packing now then! We might move in a month...

@lamariniere: I think we're getting a stipend from the company but we'll have to arrange everything ourselves. Good call on the getting rid of stuff. We reeeally need to work on that.

@wheres_c: sounds like you had a good plan. I cannot imagine DH packing everything! hahaa he hates that kind of stuff and would much rather pay someone to do it....I am more frugal tho so will prob try to do a lot of the packing myself, ugh.

We just moved from Chicago to Houston last month while DD was 21 months and while I was 7 months pregnant. It was a lot, but you can totally manage it! We packed everything but the art on our walls ourselves. DD and I flew down and DH drove our car. We priced shipping the car but decided not to go that way. I'm happy to talk specifics of the company or costs if you'd like! Just message/wall me

We moved internationally with a toddler and an infant! Actually, it's still a work in progress. We left our home in Australia in April, when DD1 was 22 months and DD2 was 2 months old. We stayed in a different part of Australia with DH's parents for a month whilst waiting for British passports for the girls to come through. Then we went to the States and stayed with my parents for two months (minus DH who has gone ahead to England to find a job and set things up for us) whilst waiting for my UK visa to come through. And now we're in the UK and have been staying with DH's aunt and uncle in an apt on their property for the past three months whilst we wait for our house purchase to all be finalised. Touch wood, we should be in our new house within two to three weeks, so all told, it will have been a seven month moving process.

I'm not going to lie, it has sucked royally at times with a massively unsettled toddler who had absolutely no idea what was happening to her world, but the things we've been able to control, we have worked really hard at keeping constant. We packed up ourselves and shipped things over from Australia and from the US, but all moving of the items was done by movers. It is definitely worth the cost to farm out any and all tasks possible. If you have friends or family who can help out by watching your LO, take advantage of it! We're actually having my mom fly over from the States on our move in day as we will need someone to watch the girls whilst we sort out the logistics - there's just no way to get it done efficiently, or correctly, with a clingy, unsettled toddler whose entire world has just been uprooted.

It's totally doable, but just know it won't be easy and even with all the preparation in the world, your toddler will still most likely be unsettled for a while. Just try to keep as much constant as you can (bedtime routines, meals, etc) and it will hopefully make it all go a bit more smoothly! Good luck!

We moved out of state with a 1 year old.
Ours was low budget since the new job was not paying moving expenses. Hubby packed almost everything. My mom came the week before the move to watch LO so that we could both pack. We used a POD.

We shipped 1 car. Hubs and Baby flew to the new state, mom and I drove the 2nd car out there.

It was painful, but not too bad.

We've moved to two different countries with our son (company sponsored both times). If your company is paying, it should be relatively pain free. If not, I would seriously consider paying for as much as you can afford...packers, movers, shipping/trucking. The plus side to hiring people is that they can usually pack everything in one day and load it all the next.

My best advice though is to sell/donate/toss as much as possible before you move, especially if you don't have a house/apartment lined up right away.

We moved across country with a toddler and newborn! We starting packing ourselves 2 months in advance. We save all our necessities to pack last and then put then in a box with a special marking to open first. It was hard but totally doable. Get a babysitter the last few days to get LO out of the house all day.

Sounds awesome, you seem excited about it.

Is it a company sponsored move, or are you doing it on your own? I haven't done a state to state move, but I've done an international move with a 2 year old. Then I did a move in town from temp housing to our new house 8 months later. Lots of moving!

There is a chance we will be moving out of state soon! Has anyone ever made a big move with young kids?

The move itself is a good thing because we will be closer to family. But the logistics of it freak me out! Please give me tips! How did you pack every thing? did you hire someone to do it for you? Wasn't that crazy expensive?

How about actually moving all your stuff- can you recommend a moving company? We will probably ship our car too. So many details to figure out!
