Same happened for me. I hate sleeping on my back, but during prenancy that's all I ended up doing even though I tried not to. Everything was fine.

Yes, this is a nonissue. Back sleeping is fine as long as it feels good, and your body will wake you up if it feels bad.

@Mrs. Pen: That's what our midwife said too. Told me that getting sleep was the important part, if my body was in a bad position I would wake up and/or move positions naturally, and that of the two of us, I would be affected long before baby.

Like @hilsy85:, I slept on my back a lot during pregnancy, until one day I just couldn't I was never comfortable on my sides, even with pillows, and ended up sleeping a lot half on my side/half on my back (at an angle, with my comforter bunched up under my back).

@Smurfette: that's what my MW told me... if your baby was suffering, you'd wake up or feel it. If you're on your back unintentionally then your body knows you both are safe...

Just yesterday my midwife told me: "If you wake up on your back, don't freak out! It's FINE! Going to sleep on your side is all you can do." Hope that helps.

I think it's just flat on your back that's not good, but by the time it's bad to do that, it's SO uncomfortable for you to sleep flat on your back anyway. Sometimes I wake up angled backwards, not on my side but not on my back, but it's fine. Your body goes the way it's comfortable, when you wake up you can go back on your side again if you want. The danger is compressing that artery, which slows down your own heart rate, then your baby's. So your body will let you know to move when you need to.

Ha I wouldn't worry about it. I slept on my back until one day I just couldn't anymore--it felt like I was suffocating. YOu'll know when it's time to move!

@JoJoGirl: Don't worry about it! You'll wake up uncomfortable LONG before you cause any harm to your baby! I'm 32 weeks and still sleep on my back!

I had the same issue - I think you're fine. When it's truly bad for you, it will be too uncomfortable to sleep on your back. It probably wasn't like that for me until 30 weeks or so.

Thank you all! @MamaBehr: I'm 20w3d. I do find most nights I wake up in the middle of the night from being on my back, likely because I am losing my breath or something, and roll over. But more and more recently I sleep through the night that way and only realize when my alarm goes off I'm on my back! Glad to hear it's probably okay :)

This happened to me every night when I was pregnant. I'd wake up in a slight panic when I realized I was on my back and I would quickly flip over to my side. I also used a body pillow to hug to try and stay on my side.

I had no complications throughout my pregnancy and a relatively uncomplicated delivery (LO needed forceps and he couldn't clear his lungs immediately but otherwise he was/is perfect!).

I had the same issues!

I also found out that they don't always literally mean sleeping on your side, but just that you aren't sleeping completely on your back. They said, even if you have just a pillow under one side you are probably fine. That was much more comfortable for me.

I don't know how pregnant you are, but I am a back sleeper as well and had the same worries. I always seemed to end up on my back!!! However, as both pregnancies progressed I stopped because I felt like I was crushing myself with my own weight! That is when it is dangerous to the baby, not when you are still comfortable enough to sleep on your back. I would keep doing what you are doing, but should you end up on your back it is ok :) And enjoy it, because there will be a time when you can't sleep on your back!!!!

I have read that if you were causing any issues to you or baby that you would wake yourself up. My doctor told me to sleep whatever way is most comfortable to me. Course the belly is making it hard to sleep on my stomach.

And then panic I suffocated my baby!!

I got a snoogle to try and "prop" myself upright to stay on my side, but I always wake up with it wedged under one shoulder. Is this dangerous?! Someone reassure me I'm not cutting off blood supply because my pregnant-self loooooooves sleeping on my back. I was a side sleeper before!
