@ladyfingers: hahahha.
Even if they come up with something new later that does not make the current medical knowledge a "trend" it makes it "the best we know now."
Keep on with your smile and nod and do it my own way resolve! :)

@pastemoo: Yeah I'm excited for the blanket! But I'm not buying her crib statement, especially because she said her pediatrician told her it was OK. Um, she's in her 70s. So her kid's doctor from, what, 40 years ago gave it the green light? Oh, OK then.

I think they just think that, since they parented us and we're not dead, that whatever was fine back then is still fine now and it's all just hippy dippy newfangled trendy advice these days.

@ladyfingers: I hate it when people do that too..... I have several knit afghans and they are GREAT for tummy time. He loves to play with the texture and the holes. Plus it's easier to clean them than the carpet (DS is a big spitter).

Ugh! I hate it when older people are like, "Yeah, now the *thing* is babies sleeping on their backs." Like it's some trend or something. I've actually heard that several times! DH's aunt also told him she was making us a baby blanket (she makes them for everybody) and that she knows parents aren't putting blankets in the crib these days, but hers are alright because they're afghans and they have big holes in them. So I told DH, "Aw, that's sweet. It's still not going in the crib."

It's so hard to smile and nod when people say stupid things! I feel your pain; I'm sorry people are not as wise as us.

@septemberlove: UGH. My mom freaked out because I told her not to put a blanket in C's crib with her. She was insisting she would be cold and needed it and I kept telling her that she has a sleepsack and fleece PJs for a reason and that babies aren't supposed to sleep with blankets until 1 year old (sh'es 9 months). She also got mad that I told her not to feed her cheesecake and sherbert.

@zippylef: oh my gosh. I HATE that response. I swear some people act like they let their kids run wild, didn't use carseats, let their kids play with broken glass, and stupid crap by their holier-than-thou "WELL my kids didn't have that and they survived!" attitudes. It's not like anything I'm planning to do is way out in left field. I just intend to use the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendations as a guide and tweak to what I think is best for my kiddo.

I always try to be respectful and understanding, especially considering this stuff changes all the time, but when they attack me, all bets are off.

My MIL was talking to me about this and how much she got this when she had DH and even more when she had her triplets. She told me to tune these types of people out and how much it made her angry when people did it to her. I kid you not, 20 minutes later we were talking about DD who is 9 and about gettin her to clean her room. I told her about our new "method" of getting her to do it that works so well with her and then she cuts me off telling me what we should do and what worked with her kids. Ummm...
Weren't you just telling me how you hated how people told you to parent and also why would I try something different if what we are doing works?

@septemberlove: We didn't see my mom until C was 8 months old and as soon as we flew home, she was in my face not to listen to all the rules. Her standard response is "Well, I don't know how you and your brothers survived then!"

SO annoying.

Oh Lord. I usually do an eye roll and make a mental note that that person will never be asked to babysit!

And the American academy of pediatrics...

Le sigh.

I know this is part of pregnancy (they're already criticizing my parenting choices and he isn't even here yet!!) but it's frustrating.

I made a comment about wanting to put up a shelf in the nursery for the cute stuffed animals he's gotten so far, so they aren't just stuffed in a box somewhere until he can play with them. I was told they belong in his crib so he can snuggle with them...as a newborn. I said something to the effect of that that's really not recommended, that they're just supposed to have a fitted sheet and be swaddled as newborns.

Why do I even try to argue? I should know SO well by now that its pointless. I usually just smile and nod but it slipped out before I could smile and nod.

Ugh.
