This is interesting, of all the things my son did or didn't do, he never really drooled that much. He was diagnosed as speech delayed. His issue is more of a jaw thing though.

Yep, our doc says she sees a lot of speech delays caused by lip and tongue ties! Drool could be a side effect of that!

@pinkb: don't let that mommy guilt in!

@coopsmama: I'm so sorry. It's so hard to even know anything about the issue because awareness is so low. I'm really glad that you were able to take care of your second baby's ties.

I could see how it's related. For my DS his issue is CP, specifically his oral and related muscles. He drools a ton (poor oral control) and is speech delayed. But his case is very specific!

@erinpye: Yup. We didn't know better for our son who is now past two and dealing with those issues - severe lip tie and a posterior tongue tie. We had DD's taken care of at six weeks and it's been a different story completely over the first year of her life.

We had a ton of drool and no real delay. The drooling stopped right around try time taking picked up right around age 2.

@erinpye: that's very interesting. We had DD's tongue tie clipped with in the first 2 weeks. I don't know why but I have feared that the clipping caused her delay. I know it didn't but that whole mommy guilt thing plays tricks on me ;)

Very interesting. LO is 3.5 now, he drooled A LOT when he was past 6 months or so? I had to bring several bibs out and he drool through all of them within a few hours it is disgusting. He was delayed in speech and we had the EI evaluation done when he was 2 years. They didn't recommend special therapy because he wasn't terribly delayed.

He is OK now at 3.5 years. In fact I sometimes wish he would stop talking - because he just talks NONSTOP! Haha. I always thought the bilingual thing took a toll on him as well. He speaks mostly English but he understand completely in Cantonese also, and can speak a few things / form simple sentences in Cantonese. So thinking back, that has to take up quite a lot of processing power in his brain to cause the delay. We had repeatedly told several of our doctors that he drools like a river, but all of them just said nah it has nothing to do with it. Grrrrr!!! I knew it!

High arched palate, drooling, excessive pickiness and food aversions, oral sensory issues and speech delay can all be caused by the highly-common and almost always-missed posterior tongue tie + upper lip tie. It KILLS me when people are ill-advised by docs who don't know a lot about it (not their fault-- it's barely covered in med school) that either the child isn't tied, or that it's not worth correcting.

@Boopers: DD babbled a little bit, but was on the later side, she hit most milestones late being a preemie. I didnt start to really worry until 16-17 months. She only had 2 word, if that, and her frustration was off the charts. She would bite herself daily because she could not communicate anything. So we got her evaluated at 17 months and started therapy at 18 months.

As an opposite case, my LO has low muscle tone and poor oral motor skills but never drooled much more than normal. Although now that I'm thinking about it, I would say more drool when eating because he had trouble managing his food. But he's never had a ton of drool throughout the day.

Interesting... DS drools a lot (he still wears bibs at 2.5 years old), but I don't think he's speech delayed. He's always babbled a lot even as an infant, and although he didn't have the recommended number of words at 18 months, his speech really took off by the time he hit 2.

I guess the drooling didn't worry me because DH always told me that his dentists always mention how he has excessive saliva, and that it's actually a good thing for his oral hygiene because it prevents cavities. I figured the drool was just a genetic thing.

That's really interesting. My LO is only 3 1/2 months. He has a high palate and has been a drooly mess lately. I'm guessing it's early signs of teething, but something I'm going to keep my eye on as he get older.

For those of you whose LOs drooled a lot and have a speech delay, did they babble as babies? At what age did you start to suspect a speech delay?

olive never drooled at all and was speech delayed. but she did always stick out her tongue and stuff her mouth with food which is a sign of low muscle tone.

Yes DD was a non stop drool machine, like a faucet, and she has a speech delay.

From what our speech therapist said, there is a correlation. DD has censory issues with her mouth/ lips and a very high pallet which she also said added to her speech delay.

A friend of mine has mentioned that excessive drooling was one of the reasons why her ped. Started the early intervention for speech therapy for her kids. My daughter is speech delayed and was drooling a lot until all her teeth came out at 22 months (she's 3.5 yrs now). My 13 mth old son also drools excessively and so it got me thinking. Has anyone else's LO that requires speech therapy was also drooling excessively?
