We only have a 30-hour a week setup like @winniebee but it seems so unreasonable to me to dictate what someone can do in their off time ... I think ours babysits off and on for others. Good for her. We pay decently, but even so, everyone should have the opportunity for a side hustle as long as it doesn't interfere with their main gig.

@regberadaisy: if she's salaried and not watching the kids during the day maybe they were afraid she would babysit for the other kids on their dime?

@winniebee: I think for this specific nanny, the kids were in school. And she wanted to help fill in at daycare when their numbers were low, while the kids were at school and the parents said no. And then made her agree that she can't babysit for other kids either on weekends, evenings and such that she wasn't working. They basically wanted her to be available to them only, 24/7!

The nanny used to work at my daycare as a lead teacher and the parents "poached" her. ;)

I think there's a difference between s/he wouldn't have time to do much else versus expliciting stating they can't.

Our new nanny watches a little boy on Saturdays. She works for us 8-5 Monday-Friday, so it would be hard for her to do much else. She does get paid vacation and sick leave from us.

Ours only works for us but she's 30 hours and free to do what she wants on her own time. She's paid vacation and sons sick but no health insurance. I think the reality is if your nanny is full time and sAlaried there's no time for them to work for anyone else.

If you use a nanny for full time childcare, is s/he exclusive to you?

I know parents that make their nanny sign contracts that they are not allowed to nanny for other families. Not even to babysit during their off hours! They want their kids to literally be the only kids they watch. But with that comes a very nice paycheck, a car for her to drive exclusively, health benefits, paid vacation time etc. Pretty sweet set up! ;)

ETA: I am just curious if this is a common setup for FT nanny contracts.
