@cvbee: you never know if you might need your stash one day. mrs. wagon's milk supply completely dried up when she took decongestants at 7 months. but she had enough freezer stash to give wagon jr one bottle/day until he was 1.

you go through 12 bags really fast, as that's only 2-3 days of milk. might as well cycle through the milk before it gets too old!

@Mrs. Bee: My stash is just for emergencies. I have about 12 bags right now, all from July, and stopped at that. I was thinking about storing 50 bags (all my bags) but now I think that would be silly. LO usually gets a bottle only once a week when I go to yoga and I usually pump a fresh one for that the night before, which never hits the freezer. So maybe I'll try that idea of giving a freezer bag on yoga night.

@cvbee: regularly cycle through your freezer stash so that it doesn't get too old. for instance i freeze all my fresh milk on friday since i nurse all weekend, then i defrost 2 bags of milk sunday night so that i'm constantly cycling through my frozen stash.

@Mrs. Bee: this business of breastmilk getting fattier as baby gets older makes me wonder if there is any point in getting much of a freezer stash going, since it might be the 'wrong' milk by the time LO uses it?

Yeah... my kid ate ALOT. I was using the giant bottles way faster than anyone else I knew. And I will say he ate more than most of my friends' kids. But he wasn't a huge chunker - always like 50% for weight at his well baby checks. You could try giving him a few pumped bottles to get a feel for how much he's eating at a time?

I only pumped, my son never caught on to nursing, but at 8 months he was eating 5-6 oz in each bottle and he'd have 5-6 bottles a day. So.... it was between 25-36 oz. Alot!

@MamaCate: @Thehistoryofus: Thanks for the replies! I'll aim for that goal.

@Mrs. Bee: Thanks for the info! I had heard that previously, but I didn't know how much of a difference there could be.

@Zuzu2and11: babies drink more formula than breastmilk because breastmilk becomes fattier as your baby gets older to meet their nutritional needs. so they do not drink more breastmilk as they get older.

I agree that 25 ounces is probably a good goal.

LO just turned 8 months. She has two 5 1/2 oz bottles at dayccare, then i nurse her 4 additional times: morning, after work, before bed and overnight. I think i read on kellymom that bf babies average 25 oz a day until 6 months and then start tapering off with the intro of solids. So maybe 25 oz per day could be a goal?

15 oz makes me feel a lot better about my ability to save enough up! I was thinking it would be closer to 32 oz a day because that is what the baby I used to nanny for would eat (formula)!

olive is almost 10 months and how much she eats hasn't changed for the past couple of months. she gets an average of 15 oz/day including her bedtime bottle, but she still wakes up once or twice in the middle of the night and nurses.

I will be leaving for a trip when LO is almost 8 months old, and I am at a loss of how much breastmilk I should have ready for him! We normally only breastfeed so I don't know how much he eats at a time/how much he eats in a day.

How much did your LO eat in a day, and how much at a time?
