I only nurse DD (4.5 mo) if she wakes up in the middle of the night (rare) or if she needs comfort after a round of shots. I EP the rest of the time. She was SOOO distractible at the breast before we transitioned to EP, and it made nursing a not very enjoyable experience for either of us. I don't mind this situation at all, I pump 6x/day and she eats 6x/day. I don't pump overnight (last is around 11:30pm, first is around 6am). If anything, my supply has increased doing it this way.

I agree that you could get on a schedule and skip the middle of the night pump. I too have a crazy fast letdown, but I always pump for at least 15 minutes since I've been dropping pumps. It has ensured the stability of my supply. I would probably start at 5 pumps a day then drop pumps as you go. At 8.5 months I'm down to 3 pumps and still producing ~30 oz. a day. Good luck!

I think it would be pretty easy to get onto a schedule. It will probably allow you to reduce the number of times you pump a lot faster than you would have otherwise. I pump 3x a day and lo eats 7 or 8 times. And the schedule can still be flexible. It shouldn't be a problem for overnight nursing because I imagine you wouldn't be pumping in the MOTN anyway.

We nurse 1x a day. I pump another 5x. So, not EPing, but almost.

@MamaMoose: I *think* for night wakings I would just nurse. So - i guess I shouldn't have said exclusively pumping.... He doesn't have a problem switching from boob to bottle so I definitely wouldn't wake up and pump to bottle feed him.

I think most of it is the fact that teething is a problem - and that he's rejecting my right side so I end up pumping it anyway

Is it just the fact that he's currently distractable that makes you want to go to EP? If so... I would give it a little time. Each time M cuts a tooth nursing is a little tough for a few days, but then we get past it. So I would probably try to wait it out a little bit if I were you. My LO still usually eats once during the night and I just can't imagine having to haul out the pump and then then give her a bottle. Popping a boob in her mouth for five minutes is much faster and easier!

LO is 5 months old and I'm toying with the idea of EP. He's been a wonderful nurser but since returning to work he gets most of his weekly meals via bottles and recently has become a not so great nurser. He almost completely rejects my right side and is so distracted at the most I can usually get him to nurse 5 minutes at a time.I'm tired of having my boob out and begging him to eat. He has been that way with bottles, too (teething i suspect!) but at least this way I'm not getting milky/pulling my shirt down every 10 min I don't mind pumping. I have a crazy fast letdown and usually am done within 10 minutes. .

Right now I pump in the mornings (one side), he nurses then I pump twice at work. He nurses a few times once I am home then I pump before bed. During the week I think it would be pretty simple to just pump when he is about to need a bottle. For example this morning he woke at 2 am so I nursed but then I pumped as soon as I got up and gave him a 7 a.m. bottle ( I would've normally nursed).

During the weekends I nurse on demand and am wondering if I decide to move towards pumping most of his bottles should I just continue to pump right before he would want to eat or should I put myself on a pump schedule?

I have a really great supply and just dont want to screw it up! Any advice would be welcomed!
