thanks guys! I'm undecided if I'm going to call the doctor today. My mom was talking to me last night and said it sounds like sciatica, which she had while she was pregnant with me. She also told me that there's not much I can do and it's "not a big deal." I was kind of frustrated when she said that, because sobbing in the kitchen because I can't move IS a big deal! (sorry for sounding 4 years old!).

I did notice that laying down helped a lot, and it's not as bad this morning. I've noticed that all week though - it gets worse as the day goes on. I know that's probably a sign to take it easy, but it's so hard when there are things to get done!

Meds may have a relatively short-term direct impact on your pain, but they may allow your body--and your brain!--to relax, which could reduce the overall pain if it does return.

@travelingbrit: Meds work for like 2 hours! Its so annoying, I think its not even worth the risk sometimes.

You guys are not alone. I need help rolling over and getting in and out of bed.
I limp sometimes and can barely stand on my right leg sometimes.
Putting my leg through pantleg can be hard.

Loving all of the advice here. My doc said Tylenol but don't want to rely on mess too much.

@sorrycharlie: That's the kind of pain I have! I was told warm baths and a MILD heating pad (not too hot or it could over heat the baby). I also see a chiropractor regularly, which has helped tremendously!! I didn't think it would help but holy cow, I'm so glad that I went.

I'd highly recommend trying a chiropractor. My turned out to be sacro-iliac joint pain and can cause sharp shooting pains down either or both legs, numbness, and pain on the back sides of your pelvis. It has to do with the joint in the back of your pelvis strangling the sciatic nerve, which causes excruciating (IMO) pain.

SAME ISSUE!! This is what I did:
1. went to doctor and complained. She recommended ice packs and heating packs (no where NEAR belly) and Tylenol Extra strength
2. went to chiropractor who gives me massage and then adjustment.
3. bought a pregnancy pillow even though DH hates it being in bed with us. Turns out...those things work wonders.

All of these "remedies" just provide daily relief. I need to go to the chiropractor every week, take tylenol every other day and sleep with my pillow every night. My doctor said to suck it up because my pregnancy will just be like this the entire time because of where and how baby decided to sit:(
Good luck with everything!!!

@sorrycharlie : yes, i can relate. i am trying to go in with an open mind...but we will see. i have a friend who had back surgery between having her 2nd and 3rd kid, and just had her 4th natural...so i'm sure if she can do it so can i--but she is a pro too!

@lydg: ah! not glad that you have the pain too, but glad I'm not alone. Last night I had to put my sleep shorts on the floor and step in..then I sobbed for DH to help me pull them up. I was so embarrassed, because I'm not even big (that's a whole 'nother thing bothering me). It's just making me more resolute to get an epidural, LOL.

@sorrycharlie: mine is on my right side. sometimes, if i'm trying to put my pants/shorts on and i lift up my leg to put one through the leg hole, i can't even stand on one foot because the back pain is so bad! can't wait for how labor will be...yay.

thanks guys. I have a thermacare thing on right now over my shirt and it's not too hot so I feel like it's not helping much. I'll try ice tonight..and I'll definitely ask my Dr about physical therapy.

@lydg: this is going to sound silly - is sciatica on the right side? that's the only reason I'm thinking it's not, is because my pain is on the left. But I don't know anything about backs!

@highwire: YES that is exactly where my pain is!!

Take tylenol. Do a lot of ice. And you can do some heat. My doc said she is fine with ten minutes on a medium setting with the heat pad. I wouldn't use those therma care pads that stick on your skin though. Try to stretch as much as possible. Once you can get a hold of your doctor, ask about starting physical therapy. It's been a life saver for me!

I have had pretty bad back pain too off and on as a result of pre-existing sciatica. I am thinking about getting a massage (I am 28 weeks now). I did get a snoogle, and that helps relieve some of the pressure and pain at night when I am trying to sleep as well as when I am sitting in a chair around the house.

I'm not even bothering to ask my doctor about it because I know it's just coming with the territory and there isn't a whole lot he can do about it...but thats just me.

I would use a heat pad to give you comfort and if it's real bad take a Tylenol to see if that helps some of the pain. Also bribe that DH of yours to give you a nice rub tonight.

I've been having a lot of intermittent extreme back pain (sometimes the pain is unbearable and I can't walk, sometimes it doesn't hurt at all). Mine is at my low, low back, near my sacrum and in my butt, varying sides. I do a lot of ice packs.

I've had back pain since I became pregnant (not before, though). The past couple weeks, it's become unbearable. No position is comfortable, and I limp when I walk, as well as my leg kind of giving way on me. It's horrible.

ETA - the pain is lower, left.

Question is - I keep forgetting to call my doctor to ask what is okay, and now the office is closed. I plan to call in the morning - but what can I do in the meantime? What have you done?

Not sure about the use of Bengay? Thermacare heat things? Heating pad? Help!!
